How did my A2K avatar end up in my email?

Reply Thu 27 Feb, 2014 03:37 pm
I sent an email to a company and they sent me a reply. It looked like this:

Them: blahblahblah

Followed by a copy of the email I sent with my A2K avatar attached.

This is the only site where I use this avatar. Is my avatar being sent out with all of my mail? I'm comfortable using this photo here but I don't want to be sharing it with other correspondents.

Has anyone else had this happen?

I hope you can help me track down my order; I've written to USPS but have not received a reply.

(Package info)

Thank you for any help you can offer in seeing that my package is delivered.

@boomerang,
I'm guessing some other site you frequent (or, infrequently show up at) also uses gravatar - maybe that is related some way.

And no, it's never happened to me. I'd be highly irritated.

@ossobuco,

@boomerang,
I know, but gravatar deals with other sites..
pay no attention, I don't know what I'm on about, that was just a guess.

When I first joined A2K I asked around about how to get an avatar but it sounded too complicated, apparently you have to host it on an external imaging site or something, so I never bothered because I didn't like the idea of my avatar floating around out there which any tom dick harry might pick up

@ossobuco,
You're right, actually. The company is probably pulling the image from gravatar, which is linked to your email address.

@jespah,
So I'll need to pull it from gravatar to make sure it isn't being sent out?

@boomerang,
Yep. It's possible (and I'm not promising anything here) that if you set it to R-rated it won't be sent out by most places.

@boomerang,
That's what they say on the site.

"Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?"

Thanks all!

Now I'll need to find the time to go back to gravatar and figure out how to delete the photo....

After reading today in the Guardian that the Brit version of NSA (or some connection somehow) is using webcam photos to get views of people's optic nerves, I guess I'll get rid of my ugly photos of my now elderly self that I have used as avatars here rarely, and only for a short time, but still keep in the selection. Not that I know if my iMac photo booth thingy is a web cam, but hey, close enough. I want only my ophthalmologist to get a good glimpse of my optic nerves, unusual as they happen to be.

Planning to stare at my feet while walking in cities..
