This is due to broken image links (added by users, not a2k) in posts in certain topics.

For example, post 1,342,350 includes http://web4.ehost-services.com/el2ton1/homer.gif as an inline image. That image link is broken and the site it is on now requires authorization so you are prompted for a username and password on some browsers (on Chrome there is no such prompt and it just displays a broken image link). The moderators sometimes edit out broken image links but currently there is no way they can find all of them.
