I attended a ceremony at which the Union of Concerned Scientists presented an award to Markey at the Arlington home of the local chapter president, an MIT prof.

I had never met Markey before and wanted to see what he's about.

A wonderful man who knows the niceties of the English language and a great deal about science as well.

He told a story of how as a 15 year old over achiever in 1962, he was looking for a science fair project. His father delivered Hood Milk and suggested that his son come to the milk processing plant to speak with the scientists there. The young Markey discovred that scientists were looking for a way to eliminate strontium 90 from milk that was there as a result of atmospheric nuclear testing.

Of course, this led to talk of Iraq, battle field weapons, bunker busters, Condoleeza Rice and more.

Very impressive. Very informative.

FYI to our non-Bay State friends - Markey is from Massachusetts.

Yes, he's one of the good ones. I've met him and his wife at campaign functions, and I like him. He's real, and he stays involved.

Suzy,

When the crowd began to thin, and I got closer in, I noticed his shirt collar was frayed (when my ex and I were first married, we took his collars to a tailor who charged $4 to turn them. Cheap at twice the price as he got an extra 18 months wear out of a shirt). At one point, Markey said that to a lot of people he makes a great deal of money but he is lowest earner from his law school class. He also said that two of his assistants have each been with him for 20 years: now that is impressive.

I'm also a bit enamored of the Union for Concerned Scientists!
Which MIT prof's home were they at? Do you know?

suzy,
While his name was on the original invitation, I did not save it. Since I was a bit under the weather, although I left the house and had one errand to run, I returned home to use my own bathroom after running the errand and arrived late, missing what Quakers and Unitarians would call the fellowship part of the event. The names of the host and hostess remained more or less lost to me.

I get emailings from the Union as well as from every other progressive and left wing cause. So many problems, so little time!!

Smile I know!
It doesn't matter. I only know of one MIT professor, who doesn't live in Arlington , anyway!
He's a brilliant guy, but then, they all probably are!
It gives me a thrill when people that are both rich and smart are progressive in their politics! You don't hear them whining about taxes all the time.
They actually care about stuff besides their money, just like Congressman Markey. Smile
Unfortunately, he's not my congressman since I moved in January, but thank the lord I got another democrat!
