David

I'm no further to agreement with you but I'm not going to try persuasion.

I do, however, have a question:

You favour moral absolutism and use "moral relativist" as an insult/slur (albeit a polite one!). I consider myself to be a moral relativist and feel quite happy with that stance, which leaves me untouched by its use as an insult in this context.

What is wrong with this stance, which effectively side-steps your point about certain sexual practices being morally wrong?

Edit: I've just found a thread on this: http://able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24585&highlight=

OUch, Osso and Dlowan, remind me not to cross swords with you. At least David has, for a moment, transcended dualism by acknowledging how thinking and feeling "co-define" each other. That's a rare observation in these parts.

Not sure how you define "co-define" - but I do not see such an acknowledgement as rare around here at all.

As I said, I believe I see quite clearly where DH is going - and, when it comes to consenting acts between adults which do not intrude on people who do not wish to see or perform them, then I think that, however many people you get to say they are disgusted, you have no more than a lot of people saying they are disgusted.

DH's analogies are persistently with acts like murder, or child abuse, which anyone can construct a good argument for not allowing - and he proceeds simply to attempt to insult and denigrate those who disagree - he does not address their arguments - merely fulminates further.

David, as I said before and you ignored,
Quote:
the problem is that you want to define offensive pornography by what you personally consider to be disgusting or unacceptable behavior rather than an objective standard such as the health and welfare of the persons involved

It doesn't matter what I personally consider to be disgusting, or why. (And for the record, I find your crude comment to me to be disgusting and completely uncalled for. It says a lot about character and morality when someone descends to personal insults when they can no longer support their position rationally.)

People have the right to pursue happiness in any way that does not compromise the heath and welfare of another person. My personal opinion towards sexual practices, boxing, tattooing, tongue splitting, dress fashions or lack thereof, consumption of worms, spiders and other disgusting items on "Fear Factor" or anything else is not anyone else's business UNLESS they will adversely affect your health and well-being.

And being disgusted at someone's choice of sexual practices is simply not enough reason for you to be able to ban it. If you want to impose some community standards on everyone, you will simply have to come up with a logical reason for your beliefs. And your personal ick factor is, quite frankly, illogical.

If you disgree on whether we can contruct moral absolutes, then by definition you must a moral relativist...as to how you handle its connotations, that's entirely of your own doing...I'm simply telling you what you are.

Well, I've already answered this enough....if you're happy playing no part in denouncing depravity then so be it.

LOL, I suspect the details of your ick factor are similar to mine, but you're still confused over who should decide what morality is...you seem more content to allow big numbers to act as your guide{I'm really impressed}.

OK - it's fine by me to "permit" (if not "endorse") what you consider to be "depravity", which for me is an issue of liberty of the individual(s) to do what they like, provided they do not harm others.

I entirely agree that you should not have these things forced upon you by television, internet, post or otherwise, as that clearly upsets you (i.e. "harms" you, in my definition of liberty).

This reminds me of the old joke about the man who showed up at the patent office with an apple to patent.

"You can't patent something that grows out of the ground!" he was told, but then he replied "Just taste it".

The patent officer tasted it and sure enough it tasted like an apple.

"Now turn it over" said the man.

He turned it over, took a bite, and it tasted like a fresh peach!!!!!!

"This is amazing!", the patent officer said, "Do you have more"?

The man proceeded to hand him apples that, when turned over also tasted like strawberries, blueberries, bananas, all manner of fruit.

"You're going to make a fortune with this!", said the patent officer and then added quietly and with sly humour, "too bad you don't have one that tastes like pussy."

"Oh, but I do,", said the man and handed him yet another apple.

The patent officer took a bite a spit it out saying, "Oh man!!!This apple tastes like ****!!!!"

"Well, then, turn it over!!"

An oldie but a goodie.

Absolutely. Two relatively staunch firm sides, and a nebulous fluffly interior where all the holes are revealed.

@cicerone imposter,
my opinion: if u dont have scientific interviews with the people in pornography-actors or prostitutes- the discussions will be endless and the result insignificant
WE WANNA HEAR THE REAL STORIES OF THOSE INVOLVED
i repeat scientific interviews, not chit chat like those found on penthouse and magazines.
