Oh my, dlowan! Quite the celebrant you are! Me? Tis 5:26 am and I will be VERY sorry I stayed up so late when my grandbaby awakens! I hear that she will be the signal that ALL in the household must waken to partake of the festivities! Great to see you online, on my Christmas!
dlowan, Just because woodchucks are called woodchucks doesn't mean that they can chuck wood--or that they want to chuck wood. First of all, woodchucks were named such by humans, who probably never bothered to ask. Maybe someone saw the animal accidentally toss a piece of wood whilst on his way somewhere. The name stuck. But if woodchucks are such ardent woodchuckers, why are the very same animals called groundhogs? Do they hog the ground? No. They don't. If they did, where would the bunnies live? And ground squirrels? And moles? Does a hummingbird hum? Does a kingfisher reel royalty out of the water? Does a buzzard buzz? Does a garter snake hold up stockings?
I still say to leave the woodchucks alone. If they wanna chuck wood, let 'em. If they don't, so be it.

Not much today, it's hibernating!
Oh, you are all so LITERAL!
Let 'em chuck, or not chuck, then, say I - but, should they, of their own tiny, furry, free willses, incline to chuck (which I aver they do, as the sparks fly upwards), then how much do they chuck?
Do they actually hibernate, or do they estivate?
I bet poor Cobalt is truly awake now!
Boida - I believe hummingbirds DO hum - not wiv their mouthses, but with their wingses - yah boo sucks!
You figgered we's all illiteral, I suppose?
not all of us, probably just me
Illiteral has not been one of the thoughts about you that has crossed my mind, Pueo........
still waiting for the other shoe to drop
I think I got the answer. How much would wood a wouldchuck chuck if a wouldchuck cud. In other words, "how much would wood cost?" "A wouldchuck chuck" means it's could have been thrown twice. And "if a wouldchuck cude" means if the wood was thrown, it would be 'regurgitated' or thrown back. Ha! I knew it was only a matter of time before I figured this one out. c.i.
Uh, thanks for sharing that with us c.i.
wooohooo, i'm the only one online!!!!!!!!!!!!. the things i could say the stuff i could post. no watch dogs around!!!!!!
aw bah humbug, it's no fun being here alone. where did you go little bunny wabbit????
dlowan, I know that hummingbirds' wings hum--but not any discernible tunes.
I suppose I have gotten carried away with the idea of forced animal labor when in fact that entire question is purely speculative. Dlowan is not standing over a woodchuck with a whip making him chuck wood. She's just wondering how much wood the woodchuck would chuck if he could chuck wood. We don't even know if woodchucks can chuck wood.
Sorry. Never mind. Pretend I was never here.
Forced animal labour!
Nevah!
CI.... er....thanks.....I think..........(puzzled...)
BANGGGGG! (other shoe dropping)
Roberta - no tune? matters not, they still hum... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Ahhhhhh, the plight of the out-of-tune woodchuck. I wondered when this particular concern would surface. I have often, myself, indeed, wondered about the tuning of the woodchuck. Are there enough woodchuck-tuners about? Is it considered a skilled trade or an art? What key are woodchucks tuned to? Does the size of the woodchuck change the tuning? Are they tuned to harmonize with chipmunks or squirrels or wabbits?
Would a tone-deaf woodchuck be useless for chucking, owing to this auditory impairment? Saddly, i think so . . . like the illiteral wabbit, the tone-deaf woodchuck is a well-meaning, but thoroughly superfluous critter . . .
A woodchuck chucks a stick of stove wood
nigh a swallowtail drowsing on my rail fence,
and the ensuing flutter of wings will bring rain
on a Japanese wedding several years hence.
I don't know why I bother mentioning it,
'tis a mere chaotic notion of little weight;
nothing to cause me great concern ...
I'm not apt to be invited, at any rate.
