Hi everyone. I am applying as a transfer to UT Austin as undeclared and was hoping someone could read through my essay. All feedback and help is appreciated!
Here is the prompt:
The statement of purpose will provide an opportunity to explain any extenuating circumstances that you feel could add value to your application. You may also want to explain unique aspects of your academic background or valued experiences you may have had that relate to your academic discipline. The statement of purpose is not meant to be a listing of accomplishments in high school or a record of your participation in school-related activities. Rather, this is your opportunity to address the admission committee directly and to let us know more about you as an individual, in a manner that your transcripts and the other application information cannot convey.

and here is my essay:
The School of Undergraduate Studies has turned out so many successful students and has provided innumerable resources for those searching for the area they are the most passionate about. I am one of the many students that possess so many skills, talents, and passions that I am not sure which area to major in. Despite this, I have a thirst for knowledge, creating things with my own hands, and know the University of Texas at Austin is the place for me to thrive, discover what I want to do with my life, and become successful.
I have always been a very focused, driven, and slightly stubborn person. I fight for what I believe in, work hard for the things I want, and enjoy planning my future. However, my last couple years of high school threw a curveball at me and I was dealing with a crippling depression and some severe health problems. I experienced excruciating pain and could not physically be at school. This led me to take an online homeschooling program my senior year. I isolated myself from my friends, gained nearly one hundred pounds, and was a shell of the person I used to be. Fortunately, I was soon diagnosed with Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, had surgery to fix the problems, and the pain vanished. I could see the light at the tunnel and knew that I needed to come out of the hole I dug myself into. I lost all of the weight I gained, I started painting, playing my viola and guitar again, learned HTML and CSS programming, and signed up for community college.
Since then, I have been going to school, working, and have been busy figuring out what the next big step is in my life. That next step is to leave home, grow as a person, and the University of Texas at Austin is the place I see myself moving forward, immersing myself in challenging classes, and taking in all that the one of a kind city has to offer. The world class faculty, the diverse student body, and the lively, beautiful campus are a few of the additional factors that draw me to the school. I will be attending North Central Texas College for the spring semester prior to the fall semester in which I am applying for. During this time I will be taking two classes, bringing my grade point average up to an anticipated 3.5 and giving me the 30 hours required to transfer.
It is no surprise so many people wish to attend the University of Texas at Austin. The quality of education is amazing, the city is lively and unique, and one can really succeed under the roof of this school. I believe my drive and motivation would allow me to discover my path and become a successful graduate. I have put forth a great effort to come out of my depression, fix my health problems, and develop a confidence I have never experienced before. I believe that I am capable of great things and will do whatever it takes to put myself out there and reach for them. I would be honored to be accepted into the University of Texas at Austin and have the opportunity to identify as a Longhorn!
