C.I, I'm not a catholic and I agree with you. The Catholic church in particular is very adept at keeping close to their chest any information which they feel would at all confuse the faithful.

The sects like Scientology, etc. do not constitute anything new. Just extreme types of heresies pertaining to mainstream religions, that always existed.

This is a very curious claim. Are you suggesting that some set of existing religions just popped into being, original and distinct and pure? And that anything which comes later in time is an heretical bastardization?

As regards...

By the way, referring to the picture: is this a local god of Texas? Hmm, I thought that Texans were Christians and not idolaters...

I'd suggest that you have it exactly backwards.

Actually I think about 60 proof, given enough of it, would give us all a vision of God.

Yes, indeed..."A visionary flood of alcohol" in the words of Leonard Cohen. It would be interesting to have an autopsy report on Abraham's liver.

Wilso, If the catholic church takes as long revealing the theory about evolution as they did about hiding their sins of child molestation and rape, it'll be a very long time in coming - if ever. Don't hold your breath. c.i.

Oh please. I attended Catholic elementry school in the 1960s and evolution was taught as part of the standard courses and I'd wager I wasn't in the first class to ever be taught evolution theory in a Catholic school.

Perhaps it's time some people updated their thinking about what the Catholic church teaches.

Hmmm - if sex and drugs make us see god - or some of us at least (I never saw no god, nohow) then it suggests that there is a god thingy in our brains - a bit like the near death experience that comes (so some believe) from trauma and anoxia plus endorphins - perhaps we will find the "god centre" in our brains with PET technology!

Of course, it still will not prove or disprove anything, since some will argue god put it there...

Thank you Blatham - Debacle sent it to me - and I loved it so much I wanted to share it, and this seemed an excellent place.

It really is the evangelical community, and most particularly the American variety, which is pushing the anti-darwin campaign.

proof of God's existence
C.I. one could neither prove nor disprove the existence of God because "he" is not defined in a way that let's us know when we have evidence of his existence or non-existence. Moveover, I could also not be able to prove the non-existence of unicorns. I may spend a life time searching every nook and crannie of the globe in search of one, but never be able to prove in a logically irrefutable way that one or more have not always managed to evade me (like Saddam's weapons of mass destruction).

The nature of "Proof" itself can be ephemeral. Frequently, long accepted perceptions are overturned by "Startling New Discoveries". Much that once was assumed "Known" has proven over time to be otherwise.

Nobody needs to prove (or disprove) God's existence to anyone until they prove it to themselves. If you claim that the burden of proof is on the side of proving the existence, don't just sit around and wait for Plato to walk thru your front door and begin a dialouge to prove the existence of God--- go out and read! Pick up Summa Theologica, good proofs in their, Descarte's MEDITATIONS, Aristotle's PHYSICS etc., etc.. There are very strong arguments for God's existence. You're talking about your fundemental views! It's your duty to yourself to seek answers!
