C.I., I'm only 98% sure. But in this case the 2% is very significant.

JLN, I'm not talking about if you're sure; only what the chimps would say if they could talk. Wink c.i.

C.I., Don't confuse me. I'm 98% "sure" that the reading chimp would say "phew!".

Frank, That's the reason I like my "religion" best; I treat all living things with respect and dignity. No dogma, just simple rules for life. c.i.

Yeah, and the best thing is, since you're making up your rules as you go, you can change 'em whenever you want, huh?

Yes, Snood, and that makes his "religion" adaptive. As new experiences teach one new lessons, one fashions new rules. Rigid rules cause us to screen out too much experience--all that conflicts with dogmatic committments. Ethics is flexible when it is situationally oriented (i.e., sometmes it's good to lie, other times it's bad). It was once said that morals (rigid rules) are "frozen ethics." I think that is what I'm talking about. See the movie The Cider House Rules. This is one of its messages.

I often wonder why human beings are so quick to enslave themselves...to work, to love, to substance abuse, to religion, to a 'way of life'....until we become a little more flexible about what our upbringing, socialization, etc. wants us to be, we are wasting our god (or whatever being) given gift of self-awareness, and free will, IMO.

Bravo, Cavfancier. I do think that this flexibility is best attained in the study of the humanities (philosophy, history, cultural anthropology, literature, etc.).

snood, JLN, and cav, My philosophy of life lets me be the judge and jury as to what is right or wrong. As somebody said, I have 'flexibility,' and I can adapt it any way I please. I don't have all those constraints; don't eat meat of Friday, confess your sins, attend church on Saturday/Sunday/Holiday, be nice while at church, but live like a crook at work, ruin other people's lives for power and money...... you all get the idea. Wink c.i.

Good, C.I. that makes you what Nietzsche calls an ubermench. You are in charge of yourself. I hope your wife is the same: an uberwench. Laughing

Yes, but remenber, Dysl. snails have a sex life. Snails find other snails "beautiful." Can't say that much for flowers. They also reproduce, but it isn't nearly as fun for them. So I'm told.
