That doesn't really answer his comment, now does it? Millions of people also believe in Creationism, UFOs, or that the Holocaust was faked. Just because "millions of people believe" in something doesn't make it correct.
You are correct. Millions may believe something which is untrue or morally wrong.
By saying, "whatever the merits.....," I let his assertion stand without comment, but pointed out that it did not settle the issue of whether the invasion was necessary. Even if Bush were the antichrist, it would not prove that some particular thing he did was a bad thing. The merits of a cause are not determined by the personal qualities of its leaders. In general, statements such as "many people feel otherwise" do not constutute proof. I guess that a statement like that is sort of a plausibility argument.
