I hear yah c.i., however, I notice in the last 2 weeks there's been a resurgence of posts. Is it my imagination?

Among other outstanding virtues of A2K is the prevalence of good natured "Give-And-Take". The weightiest of discussions on this board can suddenly erupt into frivolity and banter unimagineable on Abuzz, then resume more somber deliberation. I know the Mods and Guides keep a close watch on things, but I've noticed very few instances of ill behavior meriting action on their part (though a thread in which I participated received a bit of Administrative Admonition). Either The Mods and Guides are unimagineably good at troll control, or decent cyberbehavior is the norm here. With highest regard for and appreciation of the skills, effort, and dedication of The Current Administration of A2K, I suspect the latter.

might be your imagination Misti, or it might be the brownies.

i go to Abuzz, read your qoute of the day and leave.

i'd rather hang at Lolas and eat brownies, sing ballads, get yelled at...

Abuzz still functions, but it attracts much less visitors than before. I remember that in 2001 the "New Postings" page included more than 1,000 new postings every day, now it rarely exceeds 300.
The site owners installed foul language filter that replaces indecent words with asterisks. It is absolutely inefficient. Trolls substitute "s" with $, "a" with @, miss "c" in the four-letter obscenity (or replace "f" with "ph"), and manage to post all the words they think to be necessary. From the other side, in the innocent expression "tit for tat" the first word is being replaced by three asterisks...
The fact that the Abuzz forum is absolutely unmoderated, and it permits several users to have the same screen name brought it to the current miserable state.
And frequent technical problems with the site are another "turn off", of course.

I still Abuzz, but it definitely ain't easy there. As of right now there is a person posting with my name and url no. I don't have to tell what he's posting. If I did not like PDiddie andTemper and several other people there I would also disable my account.

Most people on there see through the imposters right away, but they make the mistake of dialoging with them. I still say that if the cretins are totally ostracised they will tire of shouting into a void and go away.

Max; here is a hint. The edgar not voicing racial epithets and cursing the leftists among Abuzzers could be me. Or, could it?

As a long time Abuzzer, I would say that the real demise of Abuzz was set in place 2+ years ago, when management decided to "revise" the Abuzz site. Much ado about nothing.

Ads in the Globe and the NYTimes. Big push to gain new members. Then what happened? The Cambridge, Ma office was shut down, the moderators were all fired and the NYTimes refused to support the site adequately.

Add to all of the above, racisism etc and you have the demise of Abuzz in a nut shell. Rolling Eyes

I know you all are right. But I can't give it up just now. I am, however making copies of much of the information on there, since there is a real danger it may all be lost forever.

I continue to post there exactly for the reason most everyone else here does not: because mostly the discourse resembles a pub, where loud, oafish, drunken louts share their (sometimes stupid, IMO) opinions.

I have always been a bit of a pub-crawler.

Sometimes there's nothing like a good cross word to exchange with a churl to make one feel a bit better.

Yes, it is often now TOO tiresome; the pretenders (sorry about that barnacle that's turned up on you of late, edgar; be flattered, not angered) occasionally make it a barroom brawl rather than just lively conversation, and, like any other pub, you gotta know when to leave, which is sometimes a tad too late.

But then, thankfully, when I surf in here, the conversation is genteel. Light, sometimes erudite; mundane, occasionally inane.

I've never been one for chatty.

So, as the old bit in Monty Python goes, I'm off in search of an argument...

Rest assured, PDid, I will always be up for a skirmish with you, and despite our diametrically opposed political philosophy, I perceive that we have a lot in common.

Of course, you are wrong most if not all of the time, but I would be happy to remind you of that as often as you wish!

My Experience, Too

And, worse, general hostility by many toward many, for ill defined, if defined at all, reasons. Nothing ever resolved, contemplative questions left unresponded to, and worse. Lack of moderators on ABZ, along with the rating system, skewed, equals a site without purpose.

It was entertaining while it remained lighthearted. Suddenly, around late summer 2001, the tone dove down into something unpleasant and got worse from there. Still, I made a few good friends and I've valued them, to this day.

I guess it's all been written already, c.i., but, yes, agreed and agreed and thanks and agreed. The only thing that could possibly save ABZ, in the state it's in now, is severe moderation and individual and unique User I.D.'s.

This forum and others like it -- the features that exist here and on other similar Forums -- are the best hope for maintaining workable sites.

Demise of Abuzz
Wow Phoenix,

I would like to borrow your guillotine to take back to Abuzz!

I saw some nasties who grabbed Joanlee's & Siobahn's names today and was posting filth using the two names together. They are two people that I have never seen use any kind of off color language.

Abuzz is becoming more and more depressing to me.

Magginkat- You may borrow it any time that you like. Problem is, once you take care of all the imposters, ne'er do wells and nogoodniks, there will be very few people left over there! Confused

So True Phoenix

It's nice to see so many of the old gang here though. I'm glad someone posted about this place. Let's just hope that the nasties don't turn up.
