we have 44 military bases in Germany.

and hundreds more around the globe that serve no obvious purpose in today's military environment.

why couldn't we close them and use the personnel and equipment and surplus cash to build roads and bridges and infrastructure here in America? (much like the new deal)

we can't even fight terrorists here at home by giving up all of our rights, what good are all those bases doing us?

we have no contemporary enemies left...

@Rockhead,
we borrow 40 cents of every dollar we spend, we would need to shut down the entire military as well as all of the spook agencies before we would see any "surplus cash". And that would only be for a year or so, inflation in the medical system costs and pensions would soon put an end to that scheme again.

you seem to be very mis-informed mate.
