Hernia or Scar Tissue?

I am a 42 year old female and I have had a dense mass in my abdomen for almost 10 years. It is to the right of my belly button (looking down) about an inch down and is maybe size of an apricot. It generally doesn't bother me but lately been slightly painful. I remember being told once it was a hernia that they couldn't operate on and then an ultrasound another time came up with a dense mass. (Forgive my lack of terminology as I have a poor memory). Firstly, if it hasn't gotten bigger in 10 years is it likely to be a hernia and if so, do all hernias require surgery? Secondly, if it is a mass, could it be scar tissue that far up from having a c-section or liposuction? What kind of dr do I need to see to confirm and will I need an ultrasound? As I have had this ten years and it hasn't grown, is this urgent?

I am average weight I forgot to add.

The internet is a fabulous tool for finding out everything about whatever ailment we've got, so use it and you'll end up knowing more about it than the medics.
Then go to a doctor and you'll be able to monitor whether he's made the right diagnosis..Smile
For example here's one good site-

@planetc,
I don't know how the system works in whatever country you're in but don't you see a doctor regularly for pap smears, blood tests etc? They will be able to refer to you to a specialist if necessary. You shouldn't be relying on a general internet message board for medical advice.
