Read . . .

Read, read, read, read, read, read . . . .

When you've done that, go find a good book in English and read it!

@karry,
Get a teach yourself book which has a good vocabulary and test to do yourself.
Beside that read, depending on your level start with childrenĀ“s books, continue with books for teenagers, later for grown ups. That is if you have a good library with English books.
If not read newspapers and magazines. Start with magazines with lots of pictures so you get a combination of words and picture. Again continue with tabloids even thoug the level is not to recommend they usually write about things you do know. Later on read good newspapers.

@karry,
Although reading will help, it's also important that you speak English as often as you can. Take every opportunity to speak to someone who is fluent in English.

Excellent advice, Roberta. Reading, in and of itself, isn't all that helpful. Reading children's books is very helpful because the context is clear and the language used helps to set basic structures.
