First and foremost - ensure that your leaders are honorable, that they follow the precepts that are your founding standards, that they follow the rule of law, that they treat other countries and other peoples the same way they themselves want to be treated.

The USA - 237 years of abject failure.

@JTT,
If a country fails because of useless politicians, surely it's the fault of the people for voting the fools into office?

I don't believe there is any inherent duty owed to The Collective aka Society. Duty only flows from a choice made to attempt to take advantage of the benefits offered by being a member of society.

In such a case you have a duty to take no wiling action that will fundamentally damage society, and its ability to attempt to provide the benefits it members have joined/formed it for.

This duty is quite encompassing and includes FM's not being a burden on society.

You have a duty to follow the laws established by the collective.

Beyond that, it's moralizing.

If a majority of the collectives members believe it no longer serves its purpose, or worse, does harm to its members, they will have in effect, established a new collective. Disassociation with the original may not be possible and then transformation (revolution) is required.
