@ossobuco,
I know this is an ancient thread, but as I was reading this I remembered the night many years ago, when I woke up with a need to visit the facility. Mr. G'bag was asleep, and knowing he is a light sleeper, I chose to visit without turning on the light (we had to get up early for work, didn't want to wake him up) so as I assumed the position suddenly I was hip deep in cold water and screamed....and.... then........ I heard....... him ...................chuckle....................................steam was coming out of my ears......but I was too tired to do anymore than grumble.

What about toilet lids? Apparently whenever you flush there's something called the faecal fountain which sends bacteria and microscopic particles of poo in the air only to land on toothbrushes and the like.

Always put the lid down before you flush.

However, no studies have yet clearly demonstrated or refuted toilet plume-related disease transmission, and the significance of the risk remains largely uncharacterized.

Lifting the lid on toilet plume aerosol: a literature review with suggestions for future research.

@tsarstepan,
I'd still rather not brush my teeth with a toothbrush containing microscopic bits of ****.

@izzythepush,
Years ago a member who went by the name of Jesusgirl posted info on the sanitary ramification of seat up versus seat down when you flush. She was a respiratory specialist who worked in a hospital where cleanliness is crucial.
She advised seat down for the same reasons as Izzy, so better safe than sorry. I prefer clean toothbrushes was well, I'm very fond of my gums and avoiding bacteria.

@glitterbag,
The benefit is seat up/down is never a problem. It's always down when you go in.

@glitterbag,
Hey, I remember Jesusgirl! I liked her much more than I did her username.

@roger,
Yeah, she was really cool, helpful, and open-minded — not what I was expecting!

@hightor,
I never knew why she used that screen name. I see her on facebook sometimes. I think she's doing fine.

Now, back to toilet seats...

Personally, I'm with the "lid down when not in use" school. But not for gender-specific or hygienic reasons. I think that, for the privilege of using 1.5 - 6 gallons of potable water to ferry our waste products to oblivion, we should at least be expected to expend a few calories in the act of lifting the lid — or in the case of men, lifting both the lid and the seat!!! — it's just heart-wrenching.

@hightor,
The added advantage of lid down is the dog won't slop water all over the floor. I really hate when that happens.
