Context:
Skoll the wolf who shall scare the Moon
Till he flies to the Wood-of-Woe:
Hati the wolf, Hridvitnir’s kin,
Who shall pursue the sun.
—“GRIMNISMAL,” The Elder Edd
Nordic saga
One of three great monsters born from the Giantess Angrboda and the trickster god Loki. Hrodvitnir was a wolf of enormous size and a fierce manner. Its siblings were Hel, goddess of the underworld and the Midgard Serpent. The gods brought up the wolf as a pet but when it became too large and dangerous they tied it with chains. Hrodvitnir broke from these chains
