There are two great myths about 9/11, spun in a seamless web that took form even as the flames shot from the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and tiny Shanksville wept.

The first myth: that there was no hint the American homeland would be targeted by al-Qaida, and nothing that could have prevented the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks - was propagated that very morning.

The second myth: that Iraq is, in the words of President George W. Bush, "the central front in the war on terror" - has led America to launch an occupation of unspecified duration and incalculable cost.

If nothing else is accomplish by the congressional hearings on 9/11, it is becoming increasingly obvious that there were mistakes by both the Clinton and Bush administrations, but there is no 'smoking gun' of blame to be found. The terrorists attempted to take down the World Trade Center during the Clinton administration, arrests were made, convictions were obtained, but there was no noticable increase in security or anti-terrorist activity.

The Bush administration of course had been briefed on 'threats' and 'warnings', just as the Clinton administration was, but what could they really do about it? Even now after 9/11, there are those who criticize the Patriot Act and holding of prisoners at Guantanamo and who would damn any attempt at profiling to identify potential terrorists. Even now many Americans want to accuse and blame but resent any efforts to remedy the situation.

Did the Bush administration know four U.S. airliners loaded with American civilians would be highjacked and flown into buildings in Washington DC.? Of course not. Would they have done whatever was in their power to do to stop it if they had known? Of course they would. No airplanes would have gotten off the ground that day for instance just as all airplanes were grounded for several days once we learned we had a problem.

And even if the White House or Pentagon had been notified of four passenger airliners going off course and heading for New York City and Washington DC, how much guts would it have taken to order these planes shot down without knowing the intent or outcome? The air traffic controllers noted a problem, but they never suspected what was about to happen. Next time I would imagine we will shoot them down. And then whoever is President will no doubt be condemned for being trigger happy.

It is time to stop finger pointing and laying blame. Far better for us to support those looking for solutions and better ways of providing security. And if we think they aren't doing enough, we should hold their feet to the fire until they do.
