Setanta wrote:Well, perhaps its the quality of the images which Husker linked, but that was my immediate reaction, especially when i read that nonsense at the bottom of the page about "one of the most beautiful women in the world." I had pretty much the same reaction to her appearance when i saw Tomb Raider . . .
I heard she was, umm, AUGMENTED for that role.
I like her--she makes everyone else I know seem sane.
Another name that hasn't come up yet: Jeri Ryan.
Best known for her role as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.
Another one: Catherine Zeta-Jones (I've only seen her in "Entrapment", opposite Connery--I think she was also in "Mask of Zorro".
Tina Turner, IIRC, is still turning heads at 63.
The expression jolie-laide, which is French, is a combination of "pretty" and "ugly." It means someone whose features are plain, but who nonetheless has a certain attraction . . .
Right. Great expression! Ugly/Pretty It was used to describe people such as Jean-Paul Belmondo
A modern day jolie-laide with broken nose:
Owen Wilson
What about Jeanne Moreau? Ugly/Pretty---although pretty doesn't begin to describe the depth and intelligence that add to her appeal.
Just to be an @sshole about this, although i don't believe the expression is ever used to describe men (sexist pigs ! ! ! surrender monkeys ! ! ! ), if it were, it would joli-laid for the boys, and jolie-laide for the girls. I've always rather enjoyed the gender differences in French words (which aren't sexist, for example, sein, a masculine noun, means "breast"). Feminine words not only agree in gender and number, but are pronounced differently as well. The classic French dramatists (Racine, Corneille) always attempted to end their verses (their plays were in verse) with feminine nouns or adjectives, because the rhymes would easily be richer, and the pronunciation more attractive. Joli-laid would be pronounced close to zholee-lay, and jolie-laide close to zholee-lehd.
Oh, and here's why i used it to describe Melina Mercouri:
When that girl wanted to smoulder, she could toast the socks right off ya . . .
Belmondo!! Yves Montand!! Jeanne Moreau was interesting too.. Gerard Depardieu...

Lips?
Steve Tyler
Liv Tyler
Mr. Delroy Lindo
Not the classic good looking guy but there's something about him that makes my knees weak.
Yes, he has a really strong face..
Hah, Diane, I hadn't noticed you had already added Jeanne Moreau!
I think Angelina Jolie's lips are real.
Here is a high school pic and her lips look pretty full at that point.

Except boobs maybe.
Well, if you people start posting Belmondo pics up here, I'm gonna respond in kind and follow-up on my earlier mentioning of her ...
Jean Seberg, era "A Bout de Souffle" ... I practically fell in love with her first time I saw that movie.
You'll have to go here to see the pic I tried to post. Forgot about geocities not allowing image posts like that.

I have a crush on several people in the lord of the rings movies. Especially
Aragorn.
Good LOTR pics
Oddly enough, I think "Elrond" is cute, and liked him in the matrix too. I think it's the firm British smile and gigantic mouth. He always looks a little bit deliciously scathingly
evil.
