@vonny,
Not that much of a space saver. they should have filled out the empty spaces in between instead of making a hole in the roof.

Aha, a modern house I like (for a change). This one is in Woodside, California. A long time friend lives there (we have widely varying incomes, laughs). My friends are avid gardeners, what a great place theirs is. Plus there was a horse next door, not theirs to take care of but a beauty to see. I always enjoyed visiting them for a lot of reasons but including so much beauty.

I pretty much like everything in the slide show, very much or ok, except that the pavers wouldn't be my choice - though I probably could get used to them.

edit - I take it back about the paving - there are three different kinds and I get the choices now.

Lovely example of wretched excess, though, and applies to the title of this thread.

Yes, the Edgar Kaufman family commissioned Wright, and lived in it for a long time.
They raised their son there, and are interred in a mausoleum there. The son's ashes are scattered there. So, the place meant a lot to them.

BTW it's about 2800 square feet on the inside, and another 2400 in outdoor terraces.

It's called Falling Waters and you can take tours of it now.

It cost $155,000 in 1939.

That's about 2.5 million today. Not so bad.

@tsarstepan,
Oh, good, Dwell. I'll enjoy this.
I've shut down SFGate (SF Chronicle) so I'm suddenly bereft of horrible mansions (I like the odd good one).

Back later.

Gotta think that these people who claim to like hotel room sized houses are a lot like how the poor claim to have no interest in Steak and LObster for dinner, how they would rather have an "Earth Friendly" meal of beans and rice....that they are making a virtue out of necessity.

@hawkeye10,
Not necessarily.

I know of two people who have places much like this in Central London, that they use during the week to avoid the long commute home.
One lives in Cornwall (South West coast), where he can afford a nice house with land. It cost him about a quarter of the price of a similar house in London, and he only has to make the long journey at weekends.
The other lives down in Dorset (South Coast) and she was spending nearly half of her salary purely on commuting.
Both tiny apartments cost them a lot of money, but when the time comes to pack it all in and sell, those London boxes will almost definitely return what they've paid out in mortgages over the years, so you could look at it as rent free accommodation over the long run.

@hawkeye10,
Where does the word "home" come into it?

Did you mention it? Did I?

Here's what you wrote.....

I would call it a living space, if you can put some clever design into the place, that living space can be remarkably functional and comfortable.
