I would like to know who this artist is, and whether it is a self portrait or not.
Simple enough, right? Very Happy
thanks

@tehlonewolf,
That is a self-portrait of Rembrandt:

@Ragman,
Looks like a takeoff on Salvador Dali to me.

@ossobuco,
Except that the image looks very much like Rembrandt in his '30s and nothing at all like Dali:

Here's a listing of works of Dali and many of his self-portraits:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Salvador+Dali+self-portrait&hl=en&qscrl=1&rlz=1T4ADFA_enUS433US433&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=7JBYUc7GKYec9gTb8oCQAQ&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1152&bih=549

However, there is a Dali abstract self-portrait that pays homage to Rembrandt self-portraits but that has nothing to do with the image posted by the OP:

@Ragman,
It might be a portrait of Rembrandt (painting a self portrait) but I have a hard time believing it is a self portrait since the style is very unlike Rembrandt.

@boomerang,
In further researching all that I can find online of Rembrandt's self-portraits painted by the artist himself, I see nowhere this image attributed to Rembrandt. That being said, I see no listing anywhere of the OP image. I can neither confirm nor disprove it to be done by the artist himself. So far, I see nowhere online the credits for that picture. The subject matter appears to be Rembrandt in his '30s doing a self-portrait.

@boomerang,
Looks a lot like the younger Dali to me. True he sometimes fooled with the mustache, but not always.

Here's a bunch of Dalis ..

@ossobuco,
Well, hello, Dali!

Seriously, with those images of Dali, it shows the darker moustache is pencil thin..(Van dyke styled) whereas in many paintings of Rembrandt it shows Rembrandt's rather lighter wispy moustache.

Therefore, I'm no longer confident that is Rembrandt. Shrugging shoulders. Unfortunately, I could find nothing online attributing that image to anyone nor naming the subject of the painting.

@Ragman,
I seem to remember Dali in a similar hat as the one in the original post, but couldn't find a photo of it, at least at first try.

Oh, and hey! happy baseball season!

To me it looks like a young Peter Paul Rubens but again, the painting style is all wrong.

Rubens painted a lot of self portraits -- he usually wore a wide brimmed black hat and black coat in them:

@boomerang,
I can see how you think it looks like Rubens.

I still think it's a modern jest on some famous painter... just which one.

@ossobuco,
I completely agree.

But some very well known artists have been known to spoof other very well known artists -- like Picasso spoofing Rembrandt in the Sutite 347 series.

Hello everybody!
I would be very grateful if someone could help me with identifying this artist.

Here is his signature:

And the picture:

@boomerang,
True. And some others have taken bits of others work.. sometimes considered as ill considered. Can't remember the guy I'm thinking of's name right now.

Anyway, I've given almost no thought to who I think might have painted this item.

@ossobuco,
I played with it a little - very idiosyncratic signature.
I want to make it Sainsl (something) but I think the first letter is a T..

@Ragman,
Ragman, I'd be stunned if that's Rembrandt. STUNNED. Here's a Rembrandt self-portrait (an older artist). This is also one of my favorite paintings in the entire world. The features, especially the nose, can't have changed that much. And the style is wrong.

@Roberta,
Agreed. I think it's more likely to be Dali posing as Rembrandt doing his self-portrait...based on the shape of the chin, eyes and pencil-thin moustache. Just a guess.
