Because the state (then Chinese government) wanted to produce more fertiliser, it forced the people to toil so hard that a third of all homes in China were destroyed?

Context:
Between 1958 and 1962, a war raged between the peasants and the state; it was a period when a third of all homes in China were destroyed to produce fertiliser and when the nation descended into famine and starvation, Mr Dikötter said.

@oristarA,

it means they reused the materials from the homes that were destroyed in order to produce fertiliser...

I am still confused. What materials in a home can be used to produce fertiliser?
Tiles? Bricks? Beams? Tables? Chairs? None is fit to be used there...

It seems too stupid to be likely. Cool

Quote:
Wood ash is commonly disposed of in landfills, but with rising disposal costs ecologically friendly alternatives are becoming more popular.[6]

For a long time wood ash has been used in agricultural soil applications as it recycles nutrients back to the land. Wood ash has some value as a fertilizer, but does not contain nitrogen. Because of the presence of calcium carbonate it acts as a liming agent and will deacidify the soil increasing its pH.[5]

RP is correct, that is exactly what it means, and a third = 1/3 = 33.333....%
