Last too big grrrr

It's funny. I just finished watching the 2010 Finnish cult film, Rare Exports. The Santa in that film would make the most courageous member of the Navy Seals cry.

Doggone it! Is it Xmas already?

Okay now a friend of mine took this photo of someone we know in town who was playing Santa for a charity event, he then decided to stop at Georgie’s Alibi for a few cocktails, my friend who is a graphic artist added the caption.

Something sinister about him all right.

Oh yes, he was a mess that night.

A few times I was forced to go sit on Santa's lap as a child, and my thoughts were always "who do they think they're kidding?"

I honestly always felt embarrassed, like I was expected to perform like some sappy kid telling some guy what I wanted for xmas.

After leaving this one store where I had to go sit on this guy's lap, an older brother confided in me that "that's not the real santa."

I made the 4 year old's equivalent of "ya think?"

I loved bad santa! always cracks me up!

so, what is the deal here?

parents want to protect their kids, teaching them about strangers, building their confidence, esteem, validating their feelings, worrying that some incident will scar them for life, yadda yadda yadda. Yet, once a year they get to plunk their kids down on the lap of someone who is terrifying them, all for the sake of a picture of them screaming their heads off.

Oh, it's a joke, except someone's not laughing.

don't get me wrong, some of those pictures are funny, but then again, it's probably a good thing I don't have kids, per my signature line.

Here, Santa Claus comes on St.-Claus-Day (December 6).
This evening, either the "Christkind" (Christ-child) ...



... or the "Weihnachtsmann" (Christmas man) tonight will bring the presents



Contrary to St. Nicolas (and especially "Knecht Ruprecht" [farmhand Rupert], who's accompaning St. Nicolas) you neither see the Christ child nor the Christmas man ...

I think the screaming is an offshoot, not a goal.

Most of the time it's cute little kids being cute on Santa's lap (neutrally to happily).

I was at the mall recently and watched them for a bit, the babies are particularly cute.

So, while it's not something we've ever done, I get why people do it.

I agree that some of these parents seem to be forcing the issue unnecessarily, though. If the kid's scared, and doesn't seem to be budging, move on.

This is our Father Christmas, (note real beard,) he's very good. My little boy has seen him three years in a row now, and the local paper is full of letters praising him.



I've only taken my kids to see Father Christmas when they've asked to see him. I've got enough to do over Christmas without queueing up to see someone the kids aren't interested in.
