Valium for flying

So to make this short. I rarely ever see doctors. I do not have a regular or family doctor. My friends just started planning a snowboarding trip that i really want to go on but absolutely hate flying because of a previous bad experience during a landing. Of course i wont be able to talk my friends into taking a 20 hour drive over the 2 hour flight. I have read into it and i was suggested to try valium before the flight. Since i dont have a regular doctor i really dont know where to start to find one. Im assuming going to a regular medical clinic will not help. I have not purchased the plane tickets, and to be honest the flight may be a deal breaker for me. If anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it

@m4rcin,
Valium is a prescription drug so it is best to consult a doctor for this. Hope this helps.

@amygarside,
Also, a person needs to know how a drug like Valium reacts on him. Even if you get a prescription, IMO the first time that you take it should not be on an airplane.

How about a cocktail on the trip? Many people have used this method to combat a fear of flying.

A regular physician can prescribe it. And you may want to go that route. But - you don't really need to pill to fly, just need to chill out, everything's going to be cool.

@m4rcin,
I had a tough cross country drive to make with my father a long time ago, and a chemist in the lab next door gave me a librium, as a friend, to settle myself. I took half of it, and still remember not feeling like I could just move my arm, luckily while being in the passenger seat. All these years later, I wonder if my father knew and understood. I've no idea how librium or valium worked, just that a lot of people used to take both.

I've had a friend who used hypnosis at first for her fear of flying - and she has since flown many times. But I don't remember if hypnosis worked. That was quite the fad for a while. I think what has happened is that she has gotten used to flying because she had to.

I have always loved flying, and I've been on some iffy planes. Still, I remember fear. I remember the guy ahead of me getting out of the Aeronaves plane in Tijuana kissing the ground, and the stewardesses with their rosaries moving in flight..

Realistically, driving is more of a big deal.

@m4rcin,
Actually, a person is in greater danger on a 20 hour drive than on a 2 hour plane trip.

My advice is to face your fears, and learn some techniques to help alleviate them. I found a good article which addresses the issue:

Relax, attempt to conquer your fear, and think of the great time that you will be having!

@Phoenix32890,
Thanks, Phoenix, that was what I was getting at.

Oh, a side thing from me to you, there are now these things called bots. Almost no post of someone introducing themselves on a2k is from a real person. Which is too bad.
Smarter people can explain this - but just to clue you in.

Very glad to see you back.

@m4rcin,
For now, you can consult a regular physician, then from there you can ask the physician if you need to be checked by a specialist or something.

I had the same problem years ago and we flew to the States regular.
I got a presciption forValium from my doctor.
You have to take it hours ahead of flying, but do not drive to the airport yourself.
To calm yourself down get some non presciption calming drops or pills to take at nighttime any time from day you order the ticket or even before as soon as you get nervous.

For me it worked out very well the first year - second year Valium helped just sitting in a drawer and third time I forgot I had it.
From then on I have no fear at all and always fall asleep before taking off.
Hopefully it will help you too.

@saab,
Are you still taking Valium up to now? Do you suffer from side effects?

Wow, all one needs to do when confronted with an irrational fear or panic is to chill out?

If only it was that simple.

I agree. Simply trying to outthink an irrational fear isn't going to make it disappear. As mentioned in other posts, go and see a general practitioner. He'll likely prescribe you something weaker then Valium considering its a controlled substance known for its habit forming.

Take what the doctor gives you, follow the instructions to a T, and go enjoy your ski trip.

After the ski trip, (if you're blessed with health insurance), go to a therapist and see if you can learn to deal with your fear of flying and any associated seemingly unrelated issues that might be feeding into your irrational fear of flying.

As I said, from then on just some drops to relax maybe one or two trips and since then nothing at all. I am so relaxed I fall asleep even before take off
