Anybody swear by em? Im making some new cabinets for our kitchen (free time ****) and I want to make decent facefronts. I was considering using Kregs rather than mitering.
Good idea or bad? ARe they strong and do they lookgood or do those little holes show up too much

@farmerman,
I goggled it, just so you would not feel so all alone...

interesting.

I think I would wanna glue in addition to the screws.

and I think it would work better with hardwoods...

cabinets just gotta look pretty after the kids are gone anyways. it's not like there will be little monkeys crawling all about on them.

@farmerman,
I had to google it too, so I've obviously never used it. Porter Cable used to have a jug on the market that did the same thing.

Somehow, I have a feeling that someone who uses chistles to make grooves isn't going to get much satisfaction out of the results, or even using it. Kind of like getting the whole cabinet ready for assembly, and smacking it together with a nail gun.

Just my opinion.

@roger,
yeh but the beauty of a cabinet with dovetail and mitered corners get to be Too damn much with wood carcasses.
Im planning on making new cabinets (BUT TO THE CEILING WITH CROWN MOULDING) My wife wants a simple faced cabinet style with 4 flass panels on the doors separated by real divided lights. Im gonna add a bead around the entie edg of the door frme and I think these butt joints with the kreg system may work IF they are as strong as the commercials say.
You said Porter Cable used to have such a system?

@Rockhead,
Im using plain rock maple so I can paint it a nice distressed blue over a mustard base color. (Im very good at making real distress look unlike that **** the kitchen cabinet companies do)
I was thinkin of using some Titebond in each screw and edge joint . Cant mae it too strong sez me.

@farmerman,
I guess they still do. This seems to be about the same idea.

@roger,
I like that one better than the kreg one.

porter cable doesn't make a bad tool that I've found...

and if simpler isn't better, it's usually a lot cheaper.

@Rockhead,
Un huh. I think Porter Cable only made one bad router in its entire history. Want to make an offer on what's left of mine? I have shifted my loyalties to Bosch. They may not make the very best of each possible product, but it works as a kind of safe harbor.

@roger,
Im not sure if its the same. The Porter Cable uses a dedicated router? while the kreg will accept any 3/8 chuck drill (with or without countersink screw)

@farmerman,
almost 300$ for a pocket hole jig???? are you shittin me?
what can this thing do that the kreg cant?

I see that the kreg unit is mounted on a work table top. The Porter Cable looks kinda complicated for this ole farmer. **** Im still trying to learn Photoshop

@Rockhead,
Best damn tools are made by Hilti, but they dont make a pocket jig. Even ifn they did, Id have to think heavily about the Hilti price diff. Like dovetail jigs, there is always one that is head and shoulders above the rest. I dont know about pocket jigs.
ANYWAY, what can be the diff?
