My fellow Americans, if you come across a 10 dollar bill that has "In Gracie We Trust" written on it in purple pen, it was mine. Mr. Green

Defacement of Currency

Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service. The United States Secret Service web address is www.secretservice.gov.

I think by reading this I gather you'll be fine.

@tsarstepan,
Good for you, tsar.

is a key phrase, the operative words being "unfit for circulation." Writing your name or "The US Treasury sucks" in indelible ink on a $10 bill, for example, does not render that bill "unfit for circulation."

@GracieGirl,
I think you're fine, Gracie. The point is you'd have to damage the money in such a way that no merchant would want to accept it as payment. Just scribbling something on it doesn't ruin it.

Didn’t it use to be a crime to photograph money? Isn’t that the reason in old movies you would see them using fake money?

Hell yeah it's against the law, but more than that, it offends god. It is a stench in god's nostrils.
