Can anyone run for VP? For example, if Kerry picks Edwards as his VP can Hillary run as a 3rd party VP without a runningmate? So we could have a president and VP of different parties. And if Kerry loses against Bush but Hillary beats Cheney, we could have a Bush/Clinton White House?

Early in the republic that is how the office was to be filled. Generally the President was the candidate with the the most electoral votes, the Vice President was the candidate with the next highest total.

Amendment 12 (1804)changed the procedure, and from my reading technically you could run independently for the office of Vice President. Political parties get around that by nominating both a presidential and vice presidential candidate and run them on the same ticket.
