there is a finite amount of time to show commercials during the super bowl; advertisers are quickly reserving spots...

Slot here is a metaphor. Literally, a slot is a rectangular aperture in a machine or apparatus that something is inserted into. A blank space in a list or schedule can be like a slot because it is 1. empty 2. ready to receive something (e.g. an advertisement)
