And The Standings After 5 Weeks:
(-) Miz Cowdoc (30-15 .667)
(1) George (48-29 .623) gives up sole possession of 1st to
(1) Cowdoc and
(1) Wandeljw, who moved up from 2nd.
(4) Liontamerx (46-30 .605) falls from 2nd along with
(5) Coastalrat (46-31 .597)
(6) Region (45-32 .584) moves up from 8th.
(7) Osso (44-33 .571) remains in a tie with
(7) Tico and
(7) Ragman.
Only about 4 games separate these players.
(10) Mysteryman (43-34 .558) advances from 16th while
(10) AndyD moves up from 15th.
(10) Rhys drops from 8th as does
(10) Jespah.
(14) JPLosman (33-27 .550) tumbles from 6th.
(15) McGentrix (42-35 .545) drops from 8th to tie with
(15) Johnboy and
(15) JPB.
(18) Edgar (41-36 .532) is only 7 behind the leaders.
(19) Ehbeth (37-40 .481) is biding her time.

Coin-toss had a mediocre week but is still doing well (49-28 .636) while the best ESPN guy is doing very well (55-22 .716). The worst expert (43-34 .558) would be in 10th.
As a group we are at .572 for the season.

@George,
You have three underdogs George. That's fairly interesting despite them being three of the narrow spreaded ones.

Judging from two weeks most players are following the overdogs and so the title will be decided on the narrow spread games. The rest being then irrelevant more or less. If 20 players pick 12 out of 16 the same, all overdogs, apart from the odd pervert, then the result of the 12 games is neither here nor there.

Unless, of course, you are running a game in an office full of ladies who don't understand these things at a $10 entry fee. The predictable results of the overdog games gives them a feeling that they are nearly winning and that the difference between 0.87 and 0.73 is only a small one when in actual fact it is a chasm as wide as the Pacific Ocean. As big as the difference between Usain Bolt doing 9.58 and the guy who came second.

In my game the bookies are weeping. I have seen bookies weeping. It's a mighty fine sight. The Tote never weeps. When you bet with a machine you are betting against your companions. A bookie is a respectable target.

@spendius,
I'm probably going to hear it for asking, but could you review for me how
you are doing your calculations?

Let's take the Steelers/Titans game as an example.
Steelers are favored by 5.

If they win by more than 5 do I get a dollar for every point over?
What about winning by less than 5 or losing?

Sorry to be so dense.

@George,
If you pick the Steelers and they win by 10 you get +5. If they win by 5 you get 0, if by 3 you lose 2 and if they lose by 5 you lose 10. Picking the Titans with those scores you lose 5, 0, and then win 2 and 10.

So if the Titans won by 25 their pickers win 30. Steelers pickers lose 30.

OT doesn't count. The result is the score at the end of normal play. If it was 17-17 then the spread result would be 17-12 to the Titans. A win of 5 and a loss of 5 for Steelers pickers.

If your pick is winning 34 --0 at the end of the 3rd you retain an interest in them adding to it or not conceding any consolation FGs. Right to the end. It's terribly exciting with real money on.

I think gambling is in our genes.

I haven't checked but I think you could bet on the electoral college FINAL score. Mr Obama is about 2 to 5 so he might be giving Mr Romney 80 start. Who becomes president being beside the point. There's a German election coming up.

@spendius,
I've checked the ECV spreads.

Mr O is 3o6 to buy (up bet) and 301 to sell (down bet).
Mr R is 237 to buy and 232 to sell.

That tells you more than what's in the papers.

My guess was pretty good. 68 is the figure.

An interesting side note---at the bottom of the chart I consulted it said "Prices may be suspended due to events in the USA".

The question is Rockie why does it count. A hard fought slugging match with 6 FGs ending 9-9 is a honourable result.

@spendius,
because the league in question settles games that way.

but we'll let them know that the english prefer ties...

@Rockhead,
I don't think we prefer ties. In matches where it is necessary to have a result we have 30 minutes extra time and then, if it is still tied, penalty shoot outs. In the normal season Premier League programme of 38 games, 19 opponents home and away, we award 3 points for a win and 1 to each team for a draw.

But even in those matches where OT is used, cup matches, standard bets are settled on the 90 minutes normal time.

It's pretty complicated actually. Like everything else.

@spendius,
Our top teams are playing 60 matches per season, Sept-May, with squads of about 25. We send exhausted players to the World Cup.

Your guys are having it easy although I expect the training is pretty strenuous. Squads of 70, off the field half the time, and short periods of action.

I have to be honest and say that most people here think NFL is exceedingly silly and is unexportable.

@spendius,
NFL did not really evolve as our football and cricket did. It was drawn up on a sheet of paper I think in the 1930s.

Imagine if we humans had been designed like that. An evolutionist must find NFL a bit like one of those poodles you sometimes see photos of. It's impossible for an evolutionist to prefer NFL to our stuff.
