@chai2,
I'm trying to think of a few examples, from film & television, of adorable, irresistible teetotalers.
Off the top of my head I can't think of any.
But there must be some!
Speaking of Dino, who could forget the ever lovable lush Forest Brooks?
msolga, I guess you don't do irony. Alcoholics are not lovable, show business just sometimes portrays them to be.
Otis was the fat dirty town drunk. Arthur only got by because he was rich.
edgar, I remember watching the Dean Martin show as a child. It was, I think one of my dads (a particularly unappealing alcoholic himself) favorite shows.
Personally I found Dean himself sleazy, and made me uncomfortable, and whenever Forest was on (it seemed like every show) I couldn't understand why anyone would think he was funny.

I will say though, that Mad TV's Anton Jackson (played by Damon Wayon) was really funny. He didn't sugarcoat it.
Then again, all the Wayan brothers have great talent.

Richard Pryor used to do a character he called Ned the Wino. I can't say he was lovable, but Pryor was a genius at evoking a character. One of my favorite bits was Pryor acting out the discussion with mobsters who owned the club where he worked.
