Just walked through the living room, where the television is entertaining itself.

Seems like a Mayberry marathon is going on, and Otis Campbell (for whom I named one of my kitties otis) was doing his thing.

Why, I'm sure Andy would have let Otis babysit Opie if he and Aunt Bea had to go up to Mount Pilot.

@chai2,
I'm trying to think of a few examples, from film & television, of adorable, irresistible teetotalers.
Off the top of my head I can't think of any.
But there must be some!

Tori Spelling in Beverly Hills, 90210.

I've been wracking my brain to think of any.

Naw, she was your garden variety binge drinker.

Take her to Cuba and it's Girls Gone Wild.

Speaking of Dino, who could forget the ever lovable lush Forest Brooks?

msolga, I guess you don't do irony. Alcoholics are not lovable, show business just sometimes portrays them to be.

Otis was the fat dirty town drunk. Arthur only got by because he was rich.

edgar, I remember watching the Dean Martin show as a child. It was, I think one of my dads (a particularly unappealing alcoholic himself) favorite shows.

Personally I found Dean himself sleazy, and made me uncomfortable, and whenever Forest was on (it seemed like every show) I couldn't understand why anyone would think he was funny.

I will say though, that Mad TV's Anton Jackson (played by Damon Wayon) was really funny. He didn't sugarcoat it.

Then again, all the Wayan brothers have great talent.

Richard Pryor used to do a character he called Ned the Wino. I can't say he was lovable, but Pryor was a genius at evoking a character. One of my favorite bits was Pryor acting out the discussion with mobsters who owned the club where he worked.
