Well I'm more pointing at the 'holiday with my parents' thing. A lot of friends already go onto a holiday on their own (= without parents), except the rich ones who have some fancy trip to the US or Canada on their parent's bill (sorry, just jealous  ). It's not that I'm ashamed to visit Germany: absolutely not! Germany is a beautiful country - with real nature

Well, I thought it was soooooooooooooooo boring to be on holiday with my parents AND MY YOUNGER SISTER Exclamation for years and years at same place at the Lake of Constance, that I stopped that, when I was 14 (= "learning English" in England, which I did then for years and years, but on my own! ).

we've visited along the mosel twice during the last several years, really beautiful ! the first time we stayed with a vintner family in klotten (just a short distance from cochem), and were taken down into the wine cellar every night and given a taste of those luscious mosel wines - what a treat ! on our second trip we stayed just across from cochem with two elderly ladies; no wine tasting but some enjoyable trips along the mosel. hbg ... thok, any wine tasting ?

I'm not exactly "away," but will not be as active, because of eye surgery on Wednesday. Wink

All the very best c.i.!

I'm not actually away, too, but due to the summer holidays, our home has undergone a change to ... a kind of youth-hostel: we'll get visits from several nieces, nephews, godchildren until September (and are actually in the middle of that period [August 13 - 17) on the run ourselves: a couple of days in France).

c.i. : hope you will have a speedy recovery ! i've not spend much time on the the computer lately; summertime is garden time - have to take advantage of the warm weather while it lasts. also have taken some day-trips along lake ontario and the st. lawrence river to keep an eye on the seaway traffic (can't completely ignore that i grew up in hamburg). ... walter : in the late 40's and early 50's i took several bicycle trips with my friends (weser-river, moehne talsperre, rhine river, bremerhaven and cuxhaven); we were members of the youthhostel association and stayed in some interesting hostels - in bremerhafen we stayed on a former schoolship and slept in "haengematten" ,( for c.i. also called hammocks) ; if one sleeper turned over, everyone else had to turn unless you wanted the neighbour's knees in your back. when we had a chance we would also drop in on unsuspecting "hosts", friends of parents were usually preferred over relatives ! wishing you a nice summer . hbg

update on Dys and Diane
Dys and Diane checked out of the motel Friday and have moved into their new home. Work is still being done inside the house and havoc reigns for now. But they will have a new nest in another week or so.

Walter and hbg, Thanks. My sight is still a bit blurry from the salve I need to put in my eyes, but it seems to be healing. The only worry I had was my ability to go on my trip at the end of next month; the doctor assured me all will be well by then. Wink

I just want to say I'm back, and I'm surprised by the amount of posts here since I went on my holiday Shocked More than 20,000! Problem is now that I don't know where to start replying... Concerning my holiday in Germany: there is one radio station with a VERY ANNOYING DJ. Whenever someone calls the radio station, he always ends the conversation with 'Ich mag dich' (I hope I spell it correctly, maybe it's mach? My German ain't that good it seems), and the caller is supposed to say in return 'Ich mag dich auch'. < sign > I do have to say the location was beautiful, the nature was fantastic, the towns nearby (like Bernkastel-Kues, Cochem) were pitoresque, though (sorry) a bit dull. I also visited Trier (old city, lots of tourists, personally I hate that - especially when there are a lot of Dutch tourists - , but I could have expected it), Koblenz (not much to see here sadly enough, except this great monument of I think it was Bismarck and of the reunification of Germany in what was it, the late 19th century - 1878? Sorry I should have done my homework), Luxemburg (OK that's not Germany, though very beautiful, and VERY clean, it seems Luxemburg is just the Singapore of Europe, at least that's the feeling I got) and the Lorelay, although that was a lot of driving and eventually just five minutes of watching. But I did have a great time!

Back to Germany? Ehm  ... Well I would like to go to Germany again (heck, it's like a mere 50 kilometres from here), but maybe not to the Mosel again, but to the large cities (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg) - I'm more of a city person sometimes. It's not that I didn't like the Mosel area, absolutely not, but after these 12 days I've pretty much got the picture. And there is just so much to see in the world, and so little time, so maybe I just can't afford another visit

rick : welcome back ! i'm reasonably sure that the dj said : "ich mag dich ! " ; it's like saying 'i like you' . "ich mach dich " is A LOT more personal !!! ; it's what in english is called 'making out'. i'm glad you had a good time. mrs. h and i have vacationed along the mosel three times - we like early march best - no tourists, the first flowers breaking out. had lunch in a restaurant opposite the loreley and watched the ships go by. also travelled by bicycle from hameln to the rhine in the early 50's with three friends of mine(we were in school together and still stay in contact) stopping in youth-hostels along the way and exploring the old castles along the rhine. wouldn't mind visiting there again sometime - but i would prefer a river-cruise over a bicycle trip now. hbg
