In the New Economics: Fast-Food Factories?
By DAVID CAY JOHNSTON

Is cooking a hamburger patty and inserting the meat, lettuce and ketchup inside a bun a manufacturing job, like assembling automobiles?
That question is posed in the new Economic Report of the President, a thick annual compendium of observations and statistics on the health of the United States economy.

The latest edition, sent to Congress last week, questions whether fast-food restaurants should continue to be counted as part of the service sector or should be reclassified as manufacturersÂ…Â…

The report notes that the Census Bureau's North American Industry Classification System defines manufacturing as covering enterprises "engaged in the mechanical, physical or chemical transformation of materials, substances or components into new products."

David Huether, chief economist for the National Association of Manufacturers, said he had heard that some economists wanted to count hamburger flipping as manufacturing, which he noted would produce statistics showing more jobs in what has been a declining sector of the economy.

That's an interesting idea, but I doubt it's gonna get much play. Wink

Only this White House could come up with a plan and try to sell the the idea that flipping burgers was a manufacturing job. I am now firmly convinced that the inmates are running the asylum. Than again, there are people who believe all the lies and distortions of this government. All I need is a chicken in every pot, a good five cents cigar and a job at McDonalds flipping burgers. This administration also attempted to change the overtime pay rules so that many who now earn overtime will be exempt. I think that was about one year ago, but haven't heard any more about it. They probably learned that that move would cost them too many votes.
