@MichelPonting,
I've heard that Bay Watch is one of the most watched TV shows - just via the grapevine - I would not have any idea why though

@MichelPonting,
I was going to ask what you meant by 'most watched', i.e. in one night, year, or cumulatively since tv began. And then whether you meant by how many heads, or how many heads as percentage of each countries' population.

Then I googled it instead

@Lustig Andrei,
Can't say we didn't have our chance, though -- it's apparently been on for almost a decade lol.

What would you guess is the most watched TV 'event'? I'm going to say Armstrong's moon landing, since my mom has told me many times over the years about how she set her alarm clock to be sure not to miss it Smile

@Irishk,
Either that or the JFK assassination, I would guess.

I think for the most watched event, it would be the world trade centre.

@Ceili,
I wonder if it wouldn't be a sporting event - especially if you consider increasing populations and increasing access to television. Do we count youtube views?

@hingehead,
Yeah - I was more thinking of a 'scheduled' event. My mom wouldn't get up in the middle of the night to watch sports though lol. (I probably wouldn't, either),

@hingehead,
I've read that the average ManU game gets way more viewership than the superbowl. Perhaps the world cup final?

@MichelPonting,
Just this minute heard somebody on the radio (NPR's "All Things Considered") refer to American Idol as "the most watched show on TV." Go figure.

@Lustig Andrei,
You were close.

Sony/Nielson's U.S. survey of the most memorable TV moment in the last 50 years lists the 9/11 attacks as #1.

Quote:
The only thing that came close was John F. Kennedy's assassination and its aftermath in 1963, but that was only for people aged 55 and over who experienced those events as they happened instead of replayed as an historical artefact.

Then it goes on to list them in order. 'Most memorable', though, not 'most watched'.

Funny note: They do list a Super Bowl, but not for the game being memorable -- it was because of Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction lol.
