Americans will be able to test to see if they are HIV positive in the comfort of their own homes, thanks to a new over-the-counter FDA-approved test.

FDA panel backs at-home HIV test that analyzes mouth swab in 20 minutes

The OraQuick test detects the presence of HIV in saliva collected using a mouth swab. The test is designed to return a result within 20 to 40 minutes. FDA spokesperson Rita Chappelle told HealthPop that the test is the home-use version of a test that has been used by medical professionals and others trained to screen for HIV for the last eight years.

Government officials estimate one-fifth, or about 240,000 people, of the 1.2 million HIV carriers in the U.S. are not aware they are infected. Testing is one of the chief means of slowing new infections, which have held steady at about 50,000 per year for two decades.

FDA officials said the test is aimed at people who might not otherwise get tested. A Q&A document for consumers, as well as labeling information, will be available on the FDA's official website by the end of the week.

"The availability of a home-use HIV test kit provides another option for individuals to get tested so that they can seek medical care, if appropriate," said Dr. Karen Midthun, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

Currently $35 if you buy just one, but the price goes down in bulk. 20 minutes for the result, easily doable during foreplay!

The 8% false negative rate will be a problem for the squeamish however, as 1/12 of those who have it will test neg.

This is not ideal but is far better than what we have had. This test was delayed to market for years however, as the do-gooders want to force everyone to get tested with government oversight, and want to discourage casual sex even at the cost of unnecessary infection and death. We Americans are a very punitive people dont ya know.

@hawkeye10,
What if someone accidentally "transmit" the HIV during the window period, during which the detector can't detect the antibodies?
It's not the casual sex that's the problem, but how well you truthfully know your partner's "history."

@aspvenom,
dont know if they are factored into the false neg rate. In american 1/25o has HIV, but if you factor out homo men and IV drug users it goes up to something like 1/700...passing the test and not being homo or an IV drug user gets us to somewhere near 1/5000 chance our partner is infected. Then we need to talk about transmission rates so the chances of getting HIV from someone who passed the test and is not homo or a IV drug user is far less than 1/5000.

Everything in life has risk, thus one is justified so that we can increase the pleasure of sex by getting rid of the condom.

Actually, drug resistant gonorrhea is on a path to be much more of a risk than HIV in sleeping around without condoms.
