@Joe Nation,
I see what you're doing there. Spambots have trouble replying.

@Ragman,
It's a pretty common name, it would be great if it was a real person.

@Joe Nation,
Yes, perhaps. What an amazing coincidence that a message with that same wording and the same introduction occurs at an average of 7 times per week on A2K?

@Ragman,
not just on A2k - exact copies and variations are on discussion forums all over the web

a few (?) years ago, there was a run on similar opening posts - turned out it was the suggestion of an ESL instructor - some students came back - many didn't (if you post that at 20 forums, will you remember them all? naaaaaaaaaaah)

@ehBeth,
The western breakfast teacher?

I've stopped being the jolly welcomer, as they all seem like set ups for later spam.
But I'm not sure of that either, actually doubt it, as I haven't seen that as followthrough.

@ossobuco,
No, this was someone fairly recent, in the past month, if I am remembering correctly which is doubtful.

It was the usual "This forum is one in which I would like to take part."

A construction only used by ESL instructors and Sr. Julie Phillip.

@Joe Nation,
Did anyone hear the segment on "This AMerican Life" where a reporter made a contact with a (he thought) friendly person of the opposite sex . He was involved in a few return mailings until he realized he was getting variants of a few pre planned responses. He was talking with a bot and it was good enough to fool the savvy guy (up to a point)

@farmerman,
Radiolab has had a couple of programs on bots as well, testing out whether a computer could pass the Turing Test. Interesting, and if you listen, a very good way of keeping a conversation going.

We should do a bot thread. Every post has to be an answer to the previous post and a question, bot-like.

I hate my life.
You hate your life? What is it about your life that you hate?
All of it, my parents are idiots and the cops keep hassling me.
Tell me about your parents, okay?
Screw that. I know you're not a real person.
Have the cops hassled you today?
**** yes
