@georgeob1,
And then there's the question of thorium reactors... In an intelligently run world, that would probably be the ONLY way anybody ever produced electricity.

The idea is to develop natural gas and vehicles which run on them with all possible dispatch but, until we HAVE those vehicles, we need to be producing oil and gasoline HERE, and not buying it from people who are not natural allies or anything like that. It isn't complicated.
It might be more complicated than that... If you cannot run the world, but the world belongs to those people with industry and products to sell, and you can trade your paper dollars for oil that you at the same time deny to your enemies; and at once, keep your resources unused, and near at hand, then every barrel of oil you buy is a victory... Sure; the price of fuel is revealing something about our money... Oil costs what it always costed... Our money is becoming worthless the more people with resources understand that it is only paper, and the paper of people (us)who hate them and everything they stand for...

Not when the supply of oil in the world and your own country turns out to be basically infinite and the money you pay to buy it from non-friends develops a way of coming back here in the form of airplanes crashing into our tall buildings.

@gungasnake,
Gung, youre dreaming. These "abiotic oil folks" have been shown to be full of **** in several prove-outs.
Ask "Hayseed". Also remember, ALL the funding and oversight for the Russian "abiotic oil" exploration that occured in the 1950'through 1970's came through the KGB ( you choose starnge bedfellows for a radical conservative)

Seems that the glut of gas has gotten the fracking boys to concentrate on "wet gas" drill holes so they can add to stockpiles of plastics and propane feedstocks. This will also, after an initial boom, take lots of pressure off production of light fraction petroleum products. SO I see that gasoline will start heding down probably later this year
