Median Follow up of all vs survivng patients

Hi. I am doing an audit of a group of patients with a type of cancer treated at my unit. I have 113 patients, and the period of follow up of all patients is 0 - 86.3 months, with a median of 24.3 months. Not all patients survived. My supervisor has made me change the bit where i quote median follow up to specify "median follow up of surviving patients of 24,3 months". He says I need to put that in because you cant follow up dead patients.But no paper that I have read has it like that. Any comments?

@nafvawda,
I agree that it could be misleading if you discuss the length of follow up without discussing their survival. What does removing those who didn't survive do to your median calculation? How many of the 113 didn't survive?
