One Chinese man waiting for the passenger ship to dock at the pier at the foot of Granville Strret stood out from the crowd by virtue of his nearly six-foot frame.
At the foot of a street? I have never read about such a phrase. What does the word "foot" mean here?
@Nancy88,
at the bottom of the street / at the end of the street
(think of it like the foot at the bottom of a leg)
The use of the word "foot" suggests that the street slopes.

Seems likely, if there is a pier and a dock at the end of it.
Is this in Liverpool, btw?
@McTag,
I believe the story is set in Vancouver.
@Nancy88,
You are welcome Nancy88.
I recently read a very good book about the Chinese immigrant community in Vancouver in the 1920's and 1930's.
