@ehBeth,
if you're interested in how some words are used in French-speaking Canada, there is a wonderful CBC radio program http://www.cbc.ca/radio/cestlavie

it does a marvellous word of the week segment which offers different uses of words in different areas of the country

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/cestlavie/word

i.e.

Word of the Week: "Plaie"

Host Bernard St-Laurent and Word Lady Johanne Blais discuss plaie, which means wound, sore and cut. It also means plague.

"Plaie", 18/01/154:00
Here are the usages of plaie you hear in Bernard and Johanne's conversation:

J'ai eu une plaie : I had a wound

Cette personne est une plaie : That person is a pain

Une plaie émotionnelle : (fig.) An emotional wound

Une plaie qui guérit, ou ne guérit pas : A wound/sore/cut that heals, or doesn't heal

J'avais une plaie : I had a cut

Ça a rouvert ma plaie : It reopened my wound

Rouvrir une plaie : (fig.) To reopen an old wound

Remuer/retourner le fer/le couteau dans la plaie : To rub salt into the wound

Mettre le doigt sur la plaie : To put your finger on the problem

Tu viens de mettre le doigt sur la plaie : You just found the source of the problem

(there is a link to the 4 minute segment on this word at the link)

some of the terms - like toque - are neither English nor French - they're just Canajun - used in English and French-speaking Canada

Disagree.

I know from toque, whitener, kerfuffle, runners, Chesterfield....but it means a particular style of multi buttoned leather sofa.

@Setanta,
when they brought in some tunneling machines to bore out the DC Metro, (in the 1980"). Some resourceful bum actually dug out some of the Carbide teeth in the face of a boring machine. They figured they could sell em.

Proto methheads trying to make homemade dentures for those missing teeth? Or punk rockers trying to pierce their lips and eyebrows with something new and monstrous?

@tsarstepan,
naah. They just figgered that carbide was worth "big bucks". Then they couldnt sell it (nobby bits are all custom seated) and were caught.

I know all about Canada. Once, when the destroyer I was on was headed for Seattle, the officer on the bridge said, "There's Canada." I could see a forested area for a little bit and then we lost sight of it. In addition, I used to listen to Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.

Since a couple of years, Canadian teacher students make a practicum at one of the high schools ("Gymnasium") of my native town ...

@edgarblythe,
In those days, edgar, when you saw Canada, I only could hear it: "At 87.8 on the FM-dial, this is Canadian Forces Radio CAE in Werl, Germany, ..."
The station's staff always was open minded and cooperative, especially to us Germans. The atmosphere in the studios was friendly and familiar. It was even possible to visit the station after inquiry and you could copy some rare vinyl-records on tape for private use!

One of the 7 myths about Canada
Quote:
Myth #7: Everything in Canada must be written in both English and French. Mythe #7 : tout au Canada doit être écrit en français et en anglais.

Okay, well, maybe that’s not a myth, come to think of it. Très bien, peut-être que ce n’est pas un mythe, à bien y penser.

For goodness sake, that’s really annoying. Pour l’amour de dieu, qui est vraiment ennuyeux.

Ok, just cut it out. It’s not funny anymore.

Ok, tout simplement pour réduire les dépenses. Il n’est pas plus drôle.

****. Merde.
