When my daughter was in school, her teacher showed them some Asterix cartoons. In one of them there was a character who spoke very poor French. That, of course, was the character the students found easiest to understand.
Comics in French are stickles for "correct" French. That's why the Smurfs were so popular when they appeared, because they intentionally used nonsense language, and that which was not intentionally nonsense was simple and not stilted.
