I take it you mean repulsed by the sexual inference?
For myself, it's not exactly the sexual inference that's the turn off. It's more the implication that I, the viewer, am so shallow that I'm going to run out and buy something promoted with a partially naked broad
Not everyone realizes that advertising agencies actually employ psychologists, sociologists and social anthropologists to help them analyze how to persuade a consumer to buy something. Studies are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of various gimmicks to promote a product.
Agreed, though I'd specify that it is usually to persuade the consumer to buy their product over the competition. I doubt many companies think they can compel people to buy their products soley based on the advertisement. But when someone has a headache, the companies want the ad that best demonstrates how shitty having a headache is, not necessarily what makes their product better.

@chai2,
One of the lesser "liminalist" forms is product placement in flicks. Its done so that a product is incorporated into a scne . If done well its subliminally.DERINK COCA COLA transmitted

Oh!
I just thought of a REALLY effective ad I've seen....
You've got tons of other funny condom ads out there that in no way would want me to choose that particular brand, or even make me think of buying condoms
And believe me, I was a user of condoms for many years.
This one for instance....
Funny, I suppose so, if you want the old "buffon almost gets caught" thing. But, really bad lesson at the end. Keep condoms in your glove compartment? No way, the heat would damage them.
and now, one that is just plain funny....

@chai2,
This is why I am a skittles addict...
Start reading the "s" on the skittles package then continue with Explosion.
A great deal of advertising is done to establish/reinforce image and name recognition, which only secondarily lead to sales.
Instead of asking whether an ad makes you want to buy the product, ask yourself if the ad left you with a good impression of the brand. If it did, you are more likely to choose that brand when faced with a buying decision.

Heh - told ya so.
You know, I've never really gotten that. That even if the Word sex is in there it's going to give you the sub message to buy it. I mean really, reading the word sex is no big deal. Even if I wasn't aware of it at that moment, isn't going to make me want to buy it.
