Beijing, fall/winter 2008: Once again playing with volume, Cardin pairs a slim column with a sweeping parka, both done in vivid colors.

what does volume mean here?

Volume is also a measurement. So "volume" here refers to both parts of the ensemble -- the "slim column" refers to a dress that is cut close to the body (low volume, hardly any extra fabric) plus a "sweeping" parka (billowing, lots of extra fabric), which is high volume.
