“Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?”

"We are all born as animals and live the life that animals live: we sleep, eat, reproduce, and fight. There is, however, another order of living, which the animals do not know, that of awe before the mystery of being ... that can be the root and branch of the spiritual sense of one’s days. That is the birth - the Virgin Birth - in the heart of a properly human, spiritual life."

@coluber2001,
As a human animal who has lived for over 80 years on this planet, I feel quite satisfied with the life I was able to lead in our country, the United States of America. The freedoms and opportunities that our country provided, the development of airplanes as public transportation that allows us to travel half way around the world in one day, and our ability to communicate with almost anyone on this planet instantaneously is the miracle of our times. From the time of the Great Depression when I was born in Sacramento, CA, to my "last" home in Sunnyvale, CA, it's been quite a 'trip.' Was able to travel to over 80 countries, visit all 7 continents, and develop friendships in many of them - even in Moscow. I'm only sorry I will not be able to visit with so many friends I have developed over the years, because my wife limits my travels to the US and Canada. Can't complain.

“The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.”

“It's so hard to believe in anything anymore. I mean, it's like, religion, you really can't take it seriously, because it seems so mythological, it seems so arbitrary...but, on the other hand, science is just pure empiricism, and by virtue of its method, it excludes metaphysics. I guess I wouldn't believe in anything anymore if it weren't for my lucky astrology mood watch.”

@eurocelticyankee,
Not in the same league. I've just read this and had to put it somewhere.
