“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”
― Arthur Schopenhauer, Essays and Aphorisms

“In other centuries, human beings wanted to be saved, or improved, or freed, or educated. But in our century, they want to be entertained. The great fear is not of disease or death, but of boredom. A sense of time on our hands, a sense of nothing to do. A sense that we are not amused.”

It is a profoundly erroneous truism, repeated by all copy-books and by
eminent people when they are making speeches, that we should cultivate
the habit of thinking of what we are doing. The precise opposite is the case.
Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations
which we can perform without thinking about them.

@Lustig Andrei,
I once saw the following graffito on a public toilet in San Francisco, CA:

"I used to write poems beyond these bathroom walls... Here, they mean much more."

Underneath it was scrawled this:

"No, they don't."

@George,
I suppose George that Mr Whitehead really meant that the more civilized we get the more we have to think about things we are not evolved to think about or stop thinking altogether.

Which might explain why civilizations self destruct. Too much thinking and especially critical thinking when important operations are automatic and thus anything we have to think about is unimportant by definition.

@spendius,

@JTT,
which President isn't or wasn't a criminal? This is a big crooked country that requires a big crooked President and Congress to run it.

There are four questions of value in life... What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love.
