Never saw Chuck Connors as Geronimo or Cochise or whover, but I loved him as The Rifleman, with his trick Winchester, almost as good on bad guys as a Gatling gun--wasn't he like the Lone Ranger, he always shot to wing someone, never kill.

And who was it who had the radically sawed off shotgun stock cut down and the barrels maybe 10 inches long, which he wore in a holster like a pistol? Was that Steve McQueen in "Wanted Dead or Alive", or why does the name Nick Adams keep springing to mind? "The Rebel" or something like that. Ah, just googled it, yeah Nick Adams as Johnny Yuma on "The Rebel".

@MontereyJack,
Guess you were right with both of them -

The Mare’s Leg (aka Mare’s Laig; both sometimes spelled without the apostrophe) was the name given to a customized shortened rifle by Steve McQueen’s character on the television series Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958–1961). McQueen’s character was named Josh Randall, and the gun has been referred to as a Winchester Randall, or a Randall Special.

The original Mare’s Leg was made by cutting down a .44-40 caliber Winchester Model 1892 rifle to a size that could be worn in a large leg holster and used with one hand. The barrel was cut down to a length of twelve (or possibly nine) inches, and much of the butt-stock was removed.

(extract from Wikipedia)

Although it only lasted for about one season, I loved Yancy Derringer. His Indian companion was great. He was played by X Brands.

(also from Wikipedia)
Yancy's sidekick, Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah, is a silent Pawnee American Indian who communicates only by hand gestures. Pa-hoo-Ka-Ta-Wah is Pawnee for "Wolf who stands in water." Although Pahoo was short on talk, he was long on action. Beneath a blanket wrapped about his body, he carried a shotgun which he used in emergencies. Most of the time however, he used a throwing knife sheathed in his headdress.

Geronimo has high cheek bones similar to Jeff Chandler Or Ira Gessler or whatever his name is.

@talk72000,
Good pictures, even the ones with Chuck Connors. But how tragic that even a great figure like Geronimo gets overtaken by a pop star......

@Old Goat,
In the early 70's I bought a car that was bright orange (as was the fad back then). The colour was - The Lone Oranger.

@edgarblythe,
In other news, the Lone Ranger film has met with a delay and apparently cancellation.

By IB Times Staff Reporter | August 15, 2011 9:23 AM EDT
"Disney canceled its revival of the Western television show "The Lone Ranger," citing budget disputes, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Times said the movie -- which was to star Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer -- could have cost as much as $250 million, and that the studio and filmmakers likely couldn't see making that figure work.

Depp was cast as Tonto -- the Lone Ranger's faithful companion -- while Hammer -- who played identical twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in "The Social Work" -- was set to play the title character.

The cancellation comes after reported budget disputes among Disney executives, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Gore Verbinski, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's our intention to take a very careful look at what films cost," Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger told analysts on Tuesday, the LA Times reported. "And if we can't get them to a level that we're comfortable with, we think that we're better off actually reducing the size of our slate than making films that are bigger and increasingly more risky."

"Disney has shut down production of “The Lone Ranger,” its ambitious retelling of the classic Western that was to star Johnny Depp.

Sources say the abrupt move to kill a project that was set to begin shooting in the fall comes amid budget clashes with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. A Disney spokesman could not be reached for comment.

The Lone Ranger,” scheduled for release in December 2012, was heralded by Disney as a potential franchise starring the bankable Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as the Lone Ranger. Gore Verbinski, director of the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, was set to helm.

The studio is said to have given Verbinski a firm budget number, but the director balked.

Another concern, according to an insider, is that even though Depp is the biggest star in the world, the Western is having some dark days, particularly in light of the recent poor showing of “Cowboys & Aliens.”

@Roberta,
Tonto in Spanish means "foolish." I read years ago that when the Lone Ranger and Tonto were chasing the bad guys, and they came to a fork in the road, the Lone Ranger would ask, "Which way do you think they went?". Tonto would supposedly answer, "Kemosabe." This was broken Spanish (the Lone Ranger would have spoken Spanish at that point in Southwest history; Tonto, a native American, was just learning Spanish) for "Quien sabe?" (Who knows?).

In effect, Tonto was a fool by name. It may show the audience that, even back then, it was hard to find good help.

Yes, I saw that story. I wonder if they could let Depp go and then refigure the budget. Possibly not just Depp's pay, but, some of his concepts, were unpalatable to the big shots.

@edgarblythe,
In other news, The Lone Ranger has been back in production since Feb.28 and is now giving a target date of 2013 release. Let's see how it goes this time around.
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/02/28/johnny-depps-lone-ranger-starts-shooting-in-new-mexico/

Quote:

After a close call where a soaring budget nearly killed it, Johnny Depp’s $215 million update on The Lone Ranger begins shooting today in the desert of New Mexico.
If only the title character had some kind of catchphrase to mark this auspicious event!
EW spoke with Johnny Depp previously about what he had planned for the film — which features him as Tonto, taking the reins as the lead character while Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger becomes the sidekick.
“I remember watching it as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?’” Depp told EW last year, recalling the 1949-1957 TV show, which was seen for many more decades in reruns. “I liked Tonto, even at that tender age, and knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here. That’s stuck with me.”

Costars include Barry Pepper, Helena Bonham Carter, William Fichtner, and Tom Wilkinson, though their specific characters were not revealed.
While they’re starting in New Mexico, the film — aiming for release on May 13, 2013 — will also shoot in Arizona, Utah, and Colorado.
Artist Crash McCreery, who also did the creature designs for Rango, is the production designer, and the script was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio of the four Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Eric Aronson, and Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).

Disney almost scuttled the whole enterprise when the budget ballooned to $250 million, and Bruckheimer and Verbinski saved it in October by changing the script to cut about $35 million from the cost.

@Sturgis,
I just saw a picture -- looked interesting. Definitely shades of Jack Sparrow (which makes sense with the same actor, producer, director, and even makeup artist involved):

why does tonto have a crow on his head, and why does the lone ranger have a badge when he was a free-lancer, not part of any badged force? Do like his jacket tho, much better than Clayton Moore's shirt. Yeah, I too was kind of wondering if there weould be any Jack Sparrow in the way johnny depp played Tonto. Lokks like there may be.

Actually Brace Beemer wasn't the only radio Lone Ranger, tho the longest serving one, fvrom 1941 til the series ended in 1954. He was certainly the only one I ever heard, but there were 4 or 5 other ones, or subs for him when he was sick.

Remebering the recent movie retake on the Green Hornet. The same people who invented the Lone Ranger on radio also invented the Green Hornet. Daan Reid, the Lone Ranger's nephew who came west to help out on school vacations and whenever they needed a kid around for some reason, went back East when the West was won, and became a big newspaper mogul. He had a ne'er-do-well playboy son, Britt Reid. At least that's what everybody thought he was, but at night he put on a mask and a fedora, picked up his gas gun, and went out to fight bad guys as the Green Hornet, just like his great uncle. They didn't have that relationship in the movie.

I loved Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans. I didn't realize how much until I saw my first episode of M.A.S.H. and resented very deeply the idea that anyone else would dare to use the name Hawkeye.
