See, exactly that's the difference between the European (or btter here: German) culture/understanding and that, you represent.
Just now, we've a census here (and unfortunately, I belonged to these 10% who are questioned).
They are asking questions about religion as well (and you have to answer it the same way, as it is noted in the registry office: Christian, Muslim, Jewish ...).
Further questions, however, are voluntarily, since religion (as noted earlier) is private ("Diese Angaben sind aber freiwillig, damit niemand gezwungen wird, seine Ćberzeugungen gegen seinen Willen zu offenbaren." = 'These informations, however, are voluntary, because no-one will be forced to reveal his beliefs against his will.')
