What Would Happen If We Isolated

There is something to be said for living as a hermit. This country could do with more contemplation and less action, imo. I see a grass roots edging towards isolationism as a good thing; as public policy it would be a disastrous backtracking from NAFTA.

I do think it is wrong of the United States to consume so much. Since I feel that way, how can cutting consumption of trade goods and oil be anything but the correct way to go? We could live much lighter on the land and I wish we'd do it voluntarily.

Nation's don't trade. People trade. Individuals and firms trade. Sometimes there is a border in the way. To make that border impermeable can only be done by force, and to what end? Seems to me that there are two ways in which the peoples of various nations interact: trade and war. Even when the trade is inequitable, I suspect it's preferable to war.
