@mysteryman,
Ta. I remember asking Walter what was going on Germany with Merkel. I could have missed it.
The opposition Greens, which has pacifist roots, is criticizing her on this as are many members of her own party.
Canadian jets attacked sites in Libya overnight. Turkey has deployed warships to the Med and Qatar has started providing support.

@mysteryman,
I bef your pardon! Germany withdrew it's forces from NATO comand due to .... we didn't vote in the Security Council with 'yes'.

Those navy ships, however, are still there, only under national command now. (As are quite a few US naval units.)

According to Brigadier Pierre St Amand (NATO) the alliance had so far received offers of 16 ships from a number of countries to implement the mission.

He said the ships included: a command-and-control ship from Italy; 10 frigates, including four from Turkey and one each from Britain, Spain, Greece, Italy, Canada and the US; submarines from Spain, Italy and Turkey; and auxiliary ships from Italy and Turkey.

Well, we've a couple of elections (state) coming soon ... and the overwhelming public opinion is that Ghadafi should go .... but without German soldiers being involved.

It seems that the smaller coalition partner (the Liberals, here in the person of the vice-chancellor and foreign minister) are more against an involvement than Merkle actually is.

But it's all a forward and backwards paddling, you really don't know the exact positions, IMO.

Actually, he IS a legitimate target.

I didn't say he wasn't. If the guy firing the gun is a legitimate target then it seems to me that whoever is giving him orders is also.

If there 100 firing guns on his orders he is 100 times more a LT.

Excellent! Let's remove Ghadafi without American forces and money being involved, as well.

@Ionus,
Good morning.

It must be somewhat of a relief for you to now be Ianus after a long "career" in the military where you served as Anybodywhowantsashot'sanus.

It's exceedingly difficult to understand your demented rantings, Ianus. How could this be with you, a Big W writer?

You find it exceedingly difficult to read a corn flakes packet without ranting about USA war crimes that produced it .

But you miss getting regularly porked. You're just too much of a "tough" guy to admit it.

There was a U.S. poll I read a few days back, Walter, that was all over the place. I can't remember when it was taken. It was probably after the opposition in Libya started to fall back after Ghadafi launched a counter offensive.
The U.N. approved something quickly as did most of NATO and some Arab Union countries.
The poll of Americans said we should protect civilians against Gadafi. A no-fly zone won approval but many people perhaps didn't realize how much bombing of anti-aircraft sites in Libya that would entail.
How far to go, perhaps targeting Ghadafi himself, is problematical.
Our Congress was on spring break last week, after coming back from an earlier break a week or two earlier, just long enough to punt on the budget bill .
I don't think there is any consensus in the U.S. as to where we should go so I can't criticize Germany or any other NATO ally.

@Ionus,
It's really okay, Ianus. You can admit that you got fond of men in the military, what with all the close "quarters" and all. Sometimes you pork, sometimes you get porked. That's just the kind of even handed guy you are.

It's only problematical in the eyes of others who give orders and are seeking to be closing ranks. Gadaffi should be target No 1. First. Fastest. Now.
