OMG Shocked
I never thought I would see the day or night where rap had the answer and mark didn't. That deserves a bow rap Cool

psst hey mark, just blame it on sex. That always seems to work. Either too much or not enough, doesn't matter either seems to work Laughing

Not so fast TTH and rap...

There was no requirement for the domain to be all real numbers (R); so rap's approach is legit (I would have liked to come up with a function where the domain is R, but I haven't thought of any). However, rap's function doesn't meet the requirements at x=-1 and x=1. So, his function will require three discontinuities (as opposed to one for mine: x=0).

p.s. rap's smarter than I am

markr is right f(x)=1/x is discontinuous in real numbers at 1 and -1 and (undefined) 0 as per Trys requirements. markr's function f(x)=-1*x only has one real definition discontinuity.

On a more interesting bent, for complex numbers, f(x)=conjugate x works, but only for numbers with imaginary parts (fails for real numbers). markr's function would work for all numbers in the complex plane except 0, mine still fails for 1, -1 and 0.

In retrospect---I'll say markr's function is more general, and since the goals of math (I was once told) are first generality and then elegance, markr's answer wins.

That is unless Try has a more general answer.

A very good morning to one and all.

TTH:

Separate 1000

Part 1) 2x9x19=18x19=342 and......
Part 2) 2x7x47=14x47=658
342+658=1000 Cool

So you are not just a pretty face! Very Happy

Rap: 1000=14*47+18*19 Cool

The same goes for you!

1000 = 18(19) + 14(47))

Mark:

f(f(x)) = x, but f(x) != x
f(x) = -x works for all x except 0.

Rap:

for all x <>0 f(x)=1/x so f(f(x))=F(1/x)=x

Apart from being in no position to refute the allegation that too much sex is the cause of this controversy; may I point out that as our pal Thoh found out, the wording of questions is an art learnt from the ancients, and with this in mind I proffer the following for your delectation…

f(x) = 1/x, or more generally, f(x) = a + 1/(x-a) where a is a constant and a does not equal x)

f(x) = 1/x, or more generally, f(x) = a + 1/(x-a) where a is a constant and a does not equal x)

This function also fails the f(x) != x requirement at x=a-1 and x=a+1. Therefore, it's got three discontinuities.

Actually, I have 2 Associate degrees and one BA with 2 majors and 1 minor along with a 1 year certificate and one class short of another degree. Most in different subjects. That's all in my past now. So, I don't have to think unless I want to Laughing

Oh well, back to the drawing board; you and Rap take the laurels Cool Cool …I'll take it to the wire!

A piece of wire 64 centimeters in length is cut into two parts.
Each part is then bent to form a square.
The total area of the two squares is 130 square centimeters.

How much longer is a side of the larger square than a side of the smaller square Question

It is given that the five-digit number 2xy89 is the square of an integer (in base ten).

Can you find the two-digit number xy Question

The wires are cut at 28cm and 36cm, so a side of the larger square is 2 cm linger than the shorter square.

The missing digits are 78, because 27889=167^2

markr's function has greater continuity than mine. I have two points that don't meet the requirement and one that isn't defined--markr only has one discontinuous point by definition.

markr can have two thirds of my laurels. Cool /3

RAP is the new quiz show with 3 doors.

Largely accumbent, the comely and eponymous hostess apprises the willing on how to win a prize.

Laurel, heavily made up to look like Patsy is the first hardy contestant.

RAP will give it to Laurel if she can find Schrodinger's cat behind one of the three doors.

How many doors will Laurel probably open to find the pussy if RAP kindly opens the first one for her?

NEW QUIZ SHOW
Assuming RAP opens a door without the pussy behind it, Laurel has a 50% chance of opening one door and a 50% chance of opening two doors. Therefore, the expected number of doors that Laurel will open is 1.5.

Oh how I long for the good old days when there was an occasional wrong answer I could make fun of…apart from all my wrong answers that is!

BTW Rap, you are far too generous with your laurels! Laughing

Slippy, how delightful to see you; please be careful your pussy is not snaffled by the epony mouse!

markr had Great Expectations by Dickens and felt the tip was 1.5 doors. Yippee.

Of course if Rap had not opened a door to an empty room then we'd need to consider the probability of Laurel finding zero cats with a one third likelihood and multiply her expectation by two thirds, all of which is muchly sense and sensibility although some would have it that Schrodinger's cat is neither here nor there and expecting to open 1.5 doors is quite unexpected.

Triage kindly cautioned slippery about snafu snaffling snagglepuss and such only to be astonished at insincere imitation. Speaking of roundly flattering, and based on just to hand biographical information:

BLUE DARTBOARD

Large circular blue pictures are pinned to both sides of a dartboard indiscernible other than that each face is the radius of a loved 1.

After most of A2K has had a go (inference statistical) what is the average distance between the centaur of the dartboard and the pin umm err points.
