The expression was supposed to somewhat convey the method.

The first term is the area of the right triangle formed by connecting the centers of the circles. The other terms are the fractions of the circles (based on the angles of the triangle) contained in the triangle. The difference is the area between the circles.

BTW, the asin function I used is in degrees (hence the division by 360).
