Try, for the milk riddle....

do we assume those 4 r the only containers? or r there other ones like bowls of unspecified volume that can serve as intermediates?

and we cant steal ur 10-quart containers and leave u with the 4 and 5 ones?

I'll list the results after each pouring (u can figure out from which is being poured to which)

10 10 05 04
__________
10 10 00 00

[size=8]MILK
Since there are no requirements not to waste milk, or to provide the milk in the 4- and 5-quart containers, it can be done in seven pourings without using the 5-quart container (X is Roman for 10 to make the columns line up):

4 X X

0 X X
4 6 X
0 6 X
4 2 X

"do we assume those 4 r the only containers? or r there other ones like bowls of unspecified volume that can serve as intermediates?"

Sir, you may assume what you will, I assumed that you would be unable to answer due to commitments to referee a death fight grudge match between Batman and Spiderman. It appears we were both way off the mark.

"and we cant steal ur 10-quart containers and leave u with the 4 and 5 ones?"

I am quite surprised you would consider common thievery as a suitable means to an end, I seriously doubt Mark would be able to condone such conduct in front of so many witnesses; I was entertaining the Red Sox Cheerleaders at the time. Razz

OWT ONE Question

REST
PLACED Question

CJ walks into a 7-11 store and selects four items to buy.
The clerk at the counter informs her that the total cost of the four items is $7.11.

She was completely surprised that the cost was the same as the name of the store. Shocked

The clerk informed her that he simply multiplied the cost of each item and arrived at the total. Twisted Evil

CJ calmly informed the clerk that the items should be added and not multiplied. 2 Cents

The clerk then added the items together and informed the customer that the total was still exactly $7.11. Shocked

How can this be, was CJ ripped off, who will think of the children?

What are the exact costs of each item Question

I hate shopping, so let's make that a quicky:

1.20, 1.25, 1.50 and 3.16 add up to 7.11 and multiply to 7.11

converted into pennies and at least one should have been divisable by 5,
actually it turned out 3 were divisable by 5 which made the reminder 3.16.

I was just about to go to bed when my attention was drawn to a flurry of activity in the control room upon the discovery of the following communications:

Mark:
MILK IN 9 MOVES
What happened to the two quarts each requirement?

Thoh:
I SECOND THAT!!!

Three exclamations, I ask you, three. It was no wonder the alarm bells went off.

Milk:

When I wrote in clear concise English:

"How did we measure out exactly two quarts of milk, for each?"

I assumed you would realize that some idiot had omitted the word ?'ONE' that should have preceded the words …for each. An example is shown below:

How did we measure out exactly two quarts of milk, one for each?

I am sure one can see the obvious similarities between the two lines. However the damage having been done, I am willing to take my punishment; as long as it involves a bevy of cheerleaders and a liberal supply of whipped cream.

Now I must bid you all; good night!!!

CJ, about this 7/11 thing, did you mean…..

I can't figure this one out. I keep staring at it.
It is two spelled backyards. It is before one. I don't know
Maybe it has to do with opposite or opposing?

Try,
I hope you don't mind but I was sent this and I found it funny.

Can you name the new element?

NEW ELEMENT FOUND The recent hurricanes and gasoline issues have provided more proof of the existence of a new chemical element. A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science.

The new element has been named (*************). (*************) has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since (*************) has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it
comes into contact. A minute amount of (*************) can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second to take over four days to complete.

(*************) has a normal half-life of 4 years. It does not decay, but
instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, (*************' s) Mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that (*************) is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalyzed with money, (*************) becomes Administratium. ..an element that radiates just as much energy as (*************) since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Thoh, that doesn't mean yes or no, it means you have to actually name the element and don't try "name the element" either. Laughing

(***......etc)=the name of the element, which has 13 letters.

CJ:
7/11 problem;
1.20, 1.25, 1.50 and 3.16 add up to 7.11 and multiply to 7.11 Cool Cool

converted into pennies and at least one should have been divisable by 5,
actually it turned out 3 were divisable by 5 which made the reminder 3.16.

Look out Wall Mart! Razz

The prices are: $1.20, $1.25, $1.50, and $3.16 (but not the only ones) Shocked

Let's begin by representing the problem with a pair of equations.
x y z w = 7.11
x + y + z + w = 7.11

If x,y,z,w represent the amounts of the four items in cents then we have

x y z w = 711000000
x + y + z + w = 711

What can we say so far?

The factors : 711 = (1)(3)(3)(79)

If there is to be an exact solution then the product xyzw must be divisible by 3, 9, 79.
The exact sum of the 4 items is 7.11 so the cost of each item is less than $7.11.

SOLUTION #1 (exact solution)
Suppose the customer purchased four items worth $3.16, $1.50, $1.20, and $1.25,
then the total cost and the product would be exactly $7.11 .

SOLUTION #2 (rounds correctly)
Suppose the customer selected four items which cost $.79, $1.75, $2.00, $2.57.
The total cost is $7.11. However, the product is 7.10605.
The clerk rounds correctly and quotes the amount $7.11.

SOLUTION #3 (rounds correctly)
Suppose the customer selected four items which cost $2.00, $2.07, $2.29, $.75.
The total cost is $7.11. However, the product is 7.11045.
The clerk rounds correctly and quotes the amount $7.11.
